A New Year for Continued Excellence with the Division of Arts and Humanities
Della Coletta
Dear Colleagues and Friends,

A new calendar year and quarter bring renewed energy and a driving spirit, and the Division of Arts and Humanities ushers in the New Year reminded of our continued excellence.

This month in particular, I am incredibly proud of the collective work of our entire Department of Philosophy. To be released shortly, the department's graduate program is receiving its highest ranking in one of academia's most well-respected publications. The honor - placing the program as one of the top 20 in the nation - is truly a reason to celebrate.

I have been participating greatly in the campus planning for the new Living and Learning Neighborhood, a future home for the division that will be an enriching, vibrant and collaborative community. It will be a 'neighborhood like no other,' as we are all coming to realize, and a place for our students, faculty, staff and friends to experience the impact of the arts and humanities.

Happy New Year,

Dean Cristina Della Coletta
UC San Diego Division of Arts and Humanities

Four 'Careers in the Humanities Workshops' gave students concrete steps toward successful futures. Led by Department of History professor Nancy Kwak, the workshops represent an ongoing, collective effort between the Division, the UC San Diego Career Center and the Institute of Arts and Humanities.
'It's About Time' takes over San Diego

Curated by Music professor Steven Schick, UC San Diego plays an important part in this region-wide cultural festival. Running through Feb. 11, highlights include the Helen Edison Lecture Series featuring Department of Literature alumnus Luis Urrea and the Department of Music's Reed Family Concert on Feb. 3.

To help close the gap between the pace of innovation and society's ability to deal with these advances responsibly, the Division launched the Institute for Practical Ethics. Supported with an endowment from Joel and Ann Reed, the institute is led by Department of Philosophy faculty member Craig Callender and sociologist John Evans.

Artist Anna Sew Hoy has been selected as the inaugural Martha Longenecker Roth Distinguished Artist in Residence by the Department of Visual Arts. The residency was established by an endowment honoring late artist, educator and Mingei International Museum founder Martha Longenecker Roth.

The future home of the Division of Arts and Humanities, the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood will be an exciting new addition to campus. The innovative, mixed-use community will further connect students with each other, and with faculty and staff, by incorporating residential, academic and administrative space.

Two new works selected for the prestigious Humana Festival of New American Plays were written by Department of Theatre and Dance playwrights: professor Deborah Stein and MFA student Mara Nelson-Greenberg. This marks the first time a UC San Diego faculty member and student have had their work featured simultaneously.
