Deep learning technology helps researchers map soil water content over time

Historically mapping the amount of water content in soil is essential to determine whether crops will flourish, wildfires will ignite or floods will destroy the land. Employing deep learning technology to existing soil moisture data can help accurately predict these moisture changes over time, according to a team of Penn State researchers.  >>
Can social media data be used to predict threats or identify fake news?

Conrad Tucker, associate professor of engineering design and industrial engineering, has received funding from the U.S. Air Force to investigate whether crowd-sourced data from social media can be used to not only detect threats, but also prevent catastrophic events from happening in the future.  >>
Metasurfaces enable improved optical lens performance

Producing the perfect color images we need and love often requires multiple, heavy lenses so that each color focuses in exactly the same plane. Now Penn State engineers have developed a new theory that solves the problem using a single thin lens comprised of gradient index materials and metasurface layers to properly direct the light.  >>
Researchers team up to tackle state's acid mine drainage problem

"Penn State is the land-grant university of Pennsylvania, which has more than 2,500 miles of streams that have some sort of negative impact from AMD. It's the state's No. 1 water quality problem. I feel a personal obligation to address such a major issue for the state's future," said William Burgos, professor of civil and environmental engineering.  >>
Study shines new light on how Salmonella 'die' at low temperatures

The most economical way to kill bacteria that cause common food-borne illnesses - mostly caused by Salmonella enterica - is heat, but, the mechanisms that kill Salmonella at lower temperatures were not fully understood until now, according to a team of researchers.  >>
