with Robin Hitner

Keown Falls - Photo by Robin Hitner

Hike Leader: Robin Hitner, ForestWatch Board President and District Leader

Hike Location: Johns Mountain, Conasauga River District, Chattahoochee National Forest. This is located in the Ridge & Valley physiographic province of northwest Georgia.

Outing Description: We will hike up to the falls to an observation deck to see a small 60-foot waterfall when not in a drought. Sometimes it is just a trickle. (Thanks to CoTrails, this trail was rerouted to avoid the sharp switchback trails near the falls.) Then we will take a short connector trail to the Johns Mountain Trail. The first half of this section is easy, while the second half ascends most of the 430 feet of elevation gain. We will then have an excellent view on the Johns Mountain Trail south along the ridge and eventually head downhill back to the parking lot.

Meeting Time, Place and Directions: Meet at 10:00 am at the Keown Falls Picnic parking lot. Bathroom facilities available.
Directions:   From Exit 320 on I-75 at Resaca, GA, go west of GA-136 for 6.2 miles to a stop sign. Turn right on 136W again and go 5.9 miles. Turn left on Furnace Creek Road and go 2 miles. Turn left on Pocket Road and go 2.7 miles. (Note: You will pass a Johns Mountain sign on Pocket Road, but do not turn here.)  Turn right on FS road 702 (Forest Service sign--Keown Falls), and go 0.6 miles to the picnic parking lot.
