TWO EARLY AND UNUSUAL PERSPECTIVES OF NIAGARA FALLS

A beautiful pair of mid nineteenth century Niagara Falls watercolour views by a renowned British/Canadian landscape artist who documented in watercolours, a number in the Hamilton and Niagara area. Both trimmed to image, each 30 x 43.5 cm (12 x 17 inches), unframed. Both unsigned, common for John Caddy watercolours (as quoted in DCB).

John Herbert Caddy (1801-1883) was a  painter, draftsman, illustrator and educator. Captain John Herbert Caddy was also a career soldier, civil engineer and explorer. HELLER, Joseph (1923-1999)
 
Joseph Heller was an American satirical novelist, short story writer, and playwright. His second novel, published in 1974, thirteen years after Catch-22 and spanning more than a decade writing was "Something Happened".
This collection includes a signed typed photocopy manuscript of "Something Happened" and other ephemera including signed letters.

Some collection content details;
* 8-1/2 x 11 inches. Photocopy of a typescript of the novel "Something Happened" dated 1974 (numbered 812pp). Signed on title page and dated by Heller, 4/21/76, New York City and appears to have belonged to Heller himself.

* Signed ts., 1 p. from Something Happened entitled "I Get the Willies".
The book, "Something Happened", had mixed reviews (even to this day) with this positive side of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr's quote on October 6, 1974 The New York Times book Review..."Is this book any good? Yes...   Click for more information and photos;

PRIESTLEY, J.B. (John Boynton) [1894-1984]

J.B. Priestley was an English novelist, playwright, and broadcaster.  He was one of England's last great writers. Priestley was a member of the last generation of freethinking British "sages" who contemplated both science and philosophy in their literary output. Priestley gained considerable fame as "the voice of the common people", as he was often called, a patriotic radio broadcaster, second in popularity only to Winston Churchill. He was offered a knighthood and a peerage as a token of his homeland's esteem for his work, both of which he refused, but he did accept the Order of Merit in 1977.

MACNEICE, Louis (1907-1963)

This Louis MacNeice (Irish/British poet, 1907-1963) collection includes two items;
* a signed carbon typescript of The Dark Tower
* First edition of his The Dark Tower book.

2) A first edition book, The Dark Tower and Other Radio Scripts, 45 pp. London: Faber & Faber, [1947], 204 pp., gray cloth, a near fine copy in very good, price-clipped red dust jacket; jacket has a few small tears and nicks at extremities of both panels, two-inch tear on lower spine (mended on verso), otherwise quite fresh and bright. ASHBY, Douglas W. [1898-196?]
 
This Douglas W. Ashby collection includes 12 travel diaries, 1926-9, 1931, 1945-8. Totaling 2,326 diary pages in all as well as 24 hand-drawn maps and other pen-and-ink vignettes. Plus 3 Ashby related books. The date range is from 1926 to 1948.

The author, Douglas W. Ashby, was born in 1898 in Leicester, England. His father died when he was 6. His grandfather had a shoe and boot factory. In the First World War, Ashby served as a clerk in the Army Service Corps at Darby. He was demobbed in June 1918. He remained a pacifist the remainder of his life and was the first secretary of the Peace Pledge Union in Leicester. He worked as a bank clerk. He married Mildred on 17 September 1928, and they apparently had one child named Gillian. He translated Sasha (1920) and Loves Anvil: A Romance of Northern Russia (1921) and wrote several books, including The Harp of the Hills, Poems (1923), Things Seen in Switzerland in Summer (1928), and Friar Lane (1951).

Ashby's greatly detailed hand-written diary journals describe his travels in Europe, Scotland, and England with his wife and other family members. Lots of serious walking with the topography insightfully and beautifully described including interactions with the locals. Fascinating and informative travel reading. Ashby was a serious traveller and wrote about his experiences in many one-of-a-kind lucid, informative and entertaining diaries.. . Click for more information and photos;

The text block was originally glued with rubber cement into the covers. This copy has been sewn, and the text block has been expertly and unobtrusively reinforced at the endpapers. Thick-paper wrapper.

Signed by Atwood on a paper label (Nan A. Talese / Doubleday) which is affixed on the verso of the front cover. Light scuffing to inside front cover and back cover, otherwise in near fine condition.

With 8 photos of Atwood and others at the 100th anniversary of McClelland & Stewart and an inscribed b&w photo of Atwood (New York City, 1971) by Jill Krementz. The book and photos are enclosed in a handsome black box with Atwood's drawn motif on the back and front of the box.

This is Julia Catherine Beckwith Hart's scarce second novel Tonnewonte, the 1831, 3rd Edition, first issue. 14 cm x 8 cm : (6)[7]-312pp.(1 blank). Full leather covers with gilt type on spine.
Overall condition is good.

Set in the United States and France, it tells the story of Theodore, a Frenchman who eventually must choose between an aristocratic life with his natural relatives in his native country and a democratic life as a hardworking farmer with adopted relatives on the American frontier in Tonnewonte, New York. Theodore, after fighting against Napoleon at Waterloo, finally decides to return to the greater freedom and happiness of America.

Julia Catherine Beckwith Hart was designated a "Person of National Historical Significance" by the Government of Canada in 1951.

Edward Allen Talbot was an inventor, militia officer, jp, schoolmaster, author, and journalist. In 1818, he came from England and moved his family to Middlesex County, near London, Ontario, Upper Canada.

Talbot traveled extensively though Upper and Lower Canada and his narrative includes much information on the flora and fauna, as well as the manners and customs of the various peoples he came into contact with.

Anne Langton, was a settler, artist, author, teacher, and musician.
Anne came to Canada with her family in 1837 when she was 33 years old. Her journal and letters, sent to her brother William in England, recounts her family's trials in detail. They took up residence on Sturgeon Lake, near such other genteel settlers as Thomas Alexander Stewart, Samuel Strickland, Thomas and Catharine Parr Traill, John and Susanna Moodie, and their families.

She kept accounts, glazed windows, sewed heavy upholstery, and became adept at butchery, food preservation, baking, and candle- and soap-manufacture. This is the story King's good friend Henry Albert "Bert" Harper ( 1873-1901)  who saved a young girl's life but lost his own. "Bert" had also began courting King's younger sister, Jennie in 1900.

King participated in a public subscription to raise a statue in Harper's honour and who was the inspiration for the statue of Sir Galahad which stands before the Parliament buildings in Ottawa.

This rare biography of François Xavier de Laval de Montigny  [1623-1708], the first Bishop of Quebec (1623-1708) contains much useful information about the late 17th century history of the region. Although the terminal leaf indicates this to be the end of the first volume, only one was published.

June 7, 1768 - 7 x 9 inches on period paper. Manuscript document from, "Benja(min) Cobb," requesting the payment of £300 Sterling or "Halifax Currency." Interest will be soon accruing if balances aren't paid.  Docketed on reverse "Duplicate of Capt. Benj. Cobb 3rd letter to Henry Kneller Esq. June 7, 1768"
Was folded now flat with some very small fold holes in a couple of places, otherwise, in very good condition.

This letter is addressed to Henry Kneller, was a lawyer in Québec. In the autumn of 1769, he appointed Kneller acting attorney general, with this position confirmed in 1770. He died in 1776 in England.

Letter of introduction: My dear friend, Permit me to have the pleasure of introducing to you the Miss Waldegraves, sisters of Lord Radstock, very pious amiable people, and very desirous of your personal acquaintance...

The recipient of the letter was almost certainly Elizabeth Fry, 1780- 1845, the famous British prison reformer, who had in 1817 formed an association for the improvement of female prisoners in Newgate, and later instituted an order of nursing sisters...   Click for more information and photos;

Dated Queens Anne's Mansions Tuesday 30th [circa 1880] to the well-connected literary lady, amateur actress Mary Boyle (1810-90).  
 
The letter reads: "My dear Mary Boyle, I am at home almost every afternoon of my life from three to six o'clock - except on Saturdays - and if you do not dread being lifted up six pair of stairs should be delighted to see you and grateful for you for coming. Remembering always/ Affectionately yours/ Fanny Kemble"

Printed signature in the plate is Robert Alexander Hillingford was an English painter. He specialized in historical pictures, often battle scenes.

First edition. Police FLQ large bilingual wanted poster, overall 40.5 x 50.5 cm. (16 x 20 inches), 4 half-tone illustrations (portraits), one colour black, one side only, fine condition.

This FLQ wanted poster is an integral part and a scarce historical document associated with one of the most important events in  Quebec and Canadian history.

October 16, 1970  Prime Minister Trudeau announced the imposition of the War Measures Act.
Laporte's strangled body was found in the trunk of a car on October 17. November 2, 1970 the governments of Canada and Quebec jointly offered a reward of $150,000 for information that would lead to the arrest of the kidnappers.

STOWE IS ONE  OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WOMEN IN CANADIAN HISTORY

Rare document, signed 6-1/2 x 8 inches, death certificate by Dr. Emily Stowe from June 19, 1887. This is a physician's death certificate for the wife  of James Aikenhead (they married in 1858) the founder of the well known Hardware store chain who died in 1903.

Dr. Emily Howard Stowe is very significant both for medical history as she was Canada's first woman medical practitioner, and she is one of Canada's most significant suffragist and women's rights movement leader ...  Click for more information and photos;

HOLLAND, John [1794-1872]  
 
John Holland was an English poet and newspaper editor of the Sheffield Iris and co-editor of the Sheffield Mercury. In 1832 was elected curator of the Sheffield Literary and Philosophical Society, a position he held until his death.

23.7cm x 17.7cm (8-1/2" x 7 inches), The Rainbow; 3pp. manuscript poem, titled, dated (1820) and signed. Agetoned and yellowed paper with page 3 having a 1/2 inch piece of paper missing on the bottom right, not affecting any manuscript, otherwise, very good condition. 

This early poem (1820) written by John Holland, caused great publication. Holland's poem "The Rainbow" (1820), published anonymously around the same time as one on the same subject by Thomas Campbell written in 1819 (To the Rainbow) and also published it in 1821 in The New Monthly Magazine. 8-1/2 x 11 inches, on Université de Montreal blue engraved logo letterhead with typed Public Law Research Institute.
Pierre Trudeau typed and signed, Pierre E. Trudeau, 1963 letter responding  to an invitation from a July 26, 1963 letter (carbon copy of this letter included) to participate in a new concept called "Exchange for Political Ideas in Canada".

[Tuskegee, 15 May 1912.] Letter by Booker T. Washington with his signature, requesting a contribution of tools for the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, addressed to Mr. J. T. McCready, a manufacturer in Ohio.
Very good condition.

Together with 4 ephemera from the period some of which are;
1) commemorative envelope for opening of the 'Booker T Washington Birthplace Post Office' in 1948, which bears the original signature of his daughter, Portia Washington Pittman with a scarce 3 cent postage First Day Cover (FDC) stamp of George Washington Carver, who taught for forty-seven years at the Tuskegee Institute and was born into slavery.
2 & 3) Two ephemeral prospectus leafs promote the Booker T. Washington. a)  Memorial Half Dollar, a legal tender minted in 1915, post mortem in honour of his legacy. The coin read 'From Slave Cabin to Hall of Fame.' Both leafs printed in Virginia, for the 'Booker T. Washington Birthplace Memorial Commission' whose president was S. J. Phillips.
4) A single-leaf pamphlet, possibly printed in conjunction with the previous two items, comprises the Atlanta Exposition Address delivered by Booker T. Washington in Atlanta in 1895.

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born a slave on the tobacco plantation of James Burroughs in Franklin Country, Virginia. His father was an unknown white man and his mother, the slave of James Burroughs. Casimir S. Gzowski, II [1848-1922], was a stock and Exchange broker in Toronto, Ontario.
The family resided at 60 Glen Road, Rosedale, Toronto; there were 12 children of the marriage. Interment in the family vault at St James Cemetery.
His father was Sir Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski (1813-1898) and his grandson was Peter Gzowski (1934-2002) a Canadian broadcaster, writer and reporter, most famous for his work on the CBC radio shows...  Click for more information and photos;

Each newspaper is 4 pages, each page  flat size 17 x 23-3/4 inches and folded down. All are in fair condition with some tears and small folding holes.

These newspapers report a number of stories related to William Lyon Mackenzie in the US and 1837-38 rebellion in Canada which threatened to cause a war with Britain and USA due to raids across the borders both ways.
