Benoist Monument at the St. Pete Pier
A coalition of area organizations has joined together as "Flight 2014, Inc." to plan and raise funds for a monument celebrating St. Petersburg and Tampa as the birthplace of commercial aviation. The mayor and city council have approved the concept for the monument to be located on the historic site of the original hangar on the approach to the New Pier. It is planned that a central feature of the monument will be a replica of the original Benoist Flying Airboat, the first airliner. Phil Graham Landscape Architecture has donated design services for the surrounding plaza. To learn more about Flight 2014, click here.

Kids n' Kubs
On Saturday, February 3 at North Shore Park, Mayor Kriseman's City Hall Stars will take on the world-renowned Kids and Kubs at 12:00.
The two teams have been playing tug-of-war with the Mayor's Trophy awarded to the winner of the annual contest since 2001.
The Mayor's team won the trophy in 2016 15-14, on Mayor Rick Kriseman's game-winning triple. However, the Kids
regained the coveted cup with a 11-10 victory last season.
Between the softball contest Kids & Kubs Club Secretary Ed Asay will distribute charitable donations to ten local non-profit organizations including: Boys and Girls Club, Friends of the Sunshine Center, Habitat for Humanity Pinellas, Claybaker D.U.S.T.O.F.F Foundation, Neighborly Care Network, Police Athletic League, St Pete Free Clinic, Suncoast Hospice Foundation, TASCO Center Based Teen Center, and Clearwater Free Clinic. Since 1949 over estimated $200,000 has been donated by the Club to local charities.

The proposed ban on single-use plastic bags is still on the table for City Council. But the city isn't ready to act just yet. Officials are still surveying the public and businesses to find out what they think and are also waiting to learn the fate of an existing ban in Coral Gables.
