A simulation of a 2" rainfall using USDA-NRCS Wisconsin's Rainfall Simulator trailer will show the effect of land use on soil health. Increased emphasis on water use efficiency in agriculture has led to the development and adoption of variable rate irrigation (VRI) technologies that greatly enhance the potential for increasing water use efficiency (WUE). Increasing WUE in irrigated agriculture is very important. Nitrogen (N) management is directly affected by water management due to the solubility of N. Water and N are inter-related and how one is managed directly affects management of the other. In an attempt to better understand what is needed for the integration of VRI and variable rate N (VRN) management research is being conducted at the UNL Water Resources Laboratory near Brule NE USA. This study demonstrates the challenges and complexities involved with the interaction of water and nitrogen. Find out more at
