Having analyzed how decisions made 150 years ago
still impact us today, my students are more likely to
be purposeful and thoughtful in their own civic involvement. Thanks for the great lesson!

Amy Grant's story is just one of the many testimonials we received about our lesson " Reconstructing the South: A Role Play ." Published just a year ago, the stories from the classroom have been a testament to the power of teaching people's history.

Tell us about the impact of teaching  " Reconstructing the South: A Role Play " in your classroom, and we will send you a free copy of A Short History of Reconstruction by Eric Foner.

The most powerful aspect occurred during our debrief after. The sudden realization across the room that somehow things are not all that different today swept the room like a wave. As if they all got it at once. And then the hands started shooting up left and right as everyone wanted to speak.

Reconstruction, the era immediately following the Civil War and emancipation, is full of stories that help us see the possibility of a future defined by racial equity. Though often overlooked in classrooms across the country, Reconstruction was a period where the impossible suddenly became possible.
