General News
Principal's Perspective
Dear Delone Catholic Families,

There has been a lot of focus lately on mental health issues in light of the recent tragic events in Florida, so I thought that I would take this opportunity to highlight our student assistance program here at Delone Catholic. Our program is called T.A.S.C. (Teachers Addressing Student Concerns) and its purpose is to evaluate, counsel and direct student intervention with respect to mental health and substance abuse issues in partnership with local drug and/or alcohol and mental health agencies that provide counseling services when needed.
Anyone connected with the Delone Catholic community including but not limited to staff, fellow students, and parents, may make a confidential referral to T.A.S.C. as warranted and all such referrals by any of the foregoing shall, at all times, be considered confidential. As indicated in the student handbook, "No disciplinary action against a student will take place as a result of the voluntary actions reflected above." Please click on the link here to obtain a T.A.S.C. referral form
All members of the T.A.S.C. team are required to attend a three day intensive training sponsored by True North Wellness Services and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Student Assistance Program. As the newest member of the team, I recently completed my training and was very impressed with both the quality and range of expertise and the emphasis given throughout the training on engaging and assisting parents/caregivers, students, and others in identifying and accessing appropriate school and community resources.
The primary approach taken is to identify behavioral health concerns which may cause a barrier to learning, noting how concerns may exhibit themselves in students' observable behaviors. Unfortunately, some of these behaviors go undetected for a variety of reasons. One such concern is related to the very real danger associated with the abuse of prescription medicine. We watched a powerful video on this issue that has prompted me, in turn, to share it with you. This 12 minute documentary was created by Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to share information with parents and other concerned citizens about this clear and present danger and ways to prevent and respond to it.  It can be accessed by clicking on the following link: https://ncapda.org/parents-360-rx/  .
As we approach the end of this Lenten season, I pray to our loving Father in Heaven that He will continue to shower blessings upon our community as we grow in faith and service and live our lives in accordance with our dignity as sons and daughters of God.

I wish you a Happy and Holy Easter!

May God bless you always and in all ways!

Sincerely,

Richard V. La Rocca
Principal

Kristen Landsman '18 Wins International Holocaust Art Contest
Kristen Landsman's pencil rendition titled "Humanity" was based on the verbal testimony of Holocaust survivor Natan Gipsman. Landsman's awe-inspiring drawing recently won the top prize in the "Messengers of Memory" 19th Annual Holocaust Art & Writing Contest.

"My piece, Humanity, was inspired by Natan Gipsman's heart-wrenching testimony. I wanted to portray his suffering, but also the courage and determination that Natan and his companion demonstrated. I wanted to capture the brave, split-second decision when Natan's friend hoisted him up and carried him after he had collapsed. If Natan had been left on the ground just a few minutes longer, he would have been shot. That moment, which could have resulted in his death but instead led to his survival, deserves recognition," said Landsman.

Pictured below are Landsman's winning entry titled "Humanity" and Natan Gipsman holding Landsman's winning depiction of his survival story.

SportsLeader Virtue of the Week
One pillar of the SportsLeader program is a weekly virtue that we incorporate into our athletic practices and throughout our school community. Every week, we will share them here to encourage the students to take the virtue into their homes as well!

This week our virtue theme is AUTHENTICThe strength to be always true and real.  AUTHENTICITY is necessary for everything in life. We need to be "real" for ourselves, our teammates, our family and this TEAM. If not, we will never win when it counts; trying to be something that we aren't and never will be.
