Genesis Foundation for Children
The Boston Flower & Garden Show Preview Party has been rescheduled to Thursday, March 15th due to the impending snowstorm. The party is an exclusive cocktail party among the beautiful garden displays and exhibits of the Boston Flower & Garden Show before it opens to the public.
All proceeds from the preview party will benefit The Genesis Foundation for Children (60 Temple Place).
There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine, raffles and surprise live musical entertainment from the Mix Lounge. Past entertainers included Haley Reinhart, Matt Nathanson, Nick Fradiani and The Plain White T's. Revolutionary
Women Tour During
Women's History Month
In honor of Women's History Month, the Freedom Trail Foundation is offering its Revolutionary Women Tour throughout March.
The tour goes along the Freedom Trail while exploring four centuries of Revolutionary women who changed history. The 90-minute tour features tales of early religious rebels Anne Hutchinson and Mary Dyer, patriots Abigail Adams and Mercy Otis Warren, abolitionists Harriet Beecher Stowe and Harriet Tubman and more. The tour visits where women's voices were heard, works were published and where they were laid to rest.
The tour departs from the Boston Common Visitor Information Center (139 Tremont St.) on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:45 pm. The tours are led by 18th-century costumed guides. Tickets can be purchased at the information center and TheFreedomTrail.org. |

Speak Out! 4th Annual
Boston Massacre Anniversary Orations at
Old South Meeting House on March 21st
Each year from 1772 to 1775, massive gatherings were held at the Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) to commemorate the anniversary of the Boston Massacre. On Wednesday, March 21st, enjoy the 4th Annual Boston Massacre Orations and hear selected excerpts from fiery speeches by John Hancock, Dr. Joseph Warren and others in the grand hall where they actually took place more than 240 years ago.
Audience members will also have the option to read some of the speeches. Prizes will be awarded to orators in youth and adult categories.
This event is free and open to the public, and registration is requested by clicking here. This event starts at 6 pm and has a snow date of March 28th. |

ArtsEmerson Presents Bedlam's 'Hamlet' and 'Saint Joan' in Repertory at
Cutler Majestic Theatre Thru March 25th
ArtsEmerson is presenting New York's Bedlam theater company for "Hamlet" and "Saint Joan" in repertory at the Cutler Majestic Theatre through March 25th.
The two productions feature four actors performing 49 characters for two stripped-down stagings. Both are directed by Bedlam founder Eric Tucker.

Standpipe Walking Tour on March 24th
The Old South Meeting House is offering a special program for members only to explore the historic neighborhood of Fort Hill and Cochituate Standpipe, an iconic Roxbury Landmark, on Saturday, March 24th.
The tour will climb Fort Hill as historian and State Rep. Byron Rushing describes the centuries-long significance of this observation point, and the innovative urban water system erected there when the neighborhood was annexed by Boston. The 19th-century Standpipe has rarely been opened since its 2013 restoration, so don't miss this opportunity.

The latest Griffin Museum of Photography exhibit at the Lafayette City Center Passageway is "Tree Talk."

"In this exhibition called 'Tree Talk' the Griffin Museum of Photography brings together 66 photographers who converse with trees. The exhibit has been organized to flow as a narrative from the beginning to the end of the passageway. In this way the trees all talk to each other. We hope our audience enjoys the exhibition and that all of the trees give up their secrets to you," said Paula Tognarelli, executive director and curator of Griffin Museum of Photography.

This exhibit is through a partnership by the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Abbey Group and the Downtown Boston BID. This exhibit is in the Lafayette City Center Passageway
(between Macy's and the Hyatt Regency Boston) and
open to the public from 10 am to 6 pm. The exhibit is running from Jan. 30th through May 30th.

'Triumphs and Laments' at
Emerson Urban Arts Media Gallery
Internationally acclaimed South Africa-based artist William Kentridge's "Triumphs and Laments" is at the Emerson Urban Arts Media Gallery (25 Avery St.) through April 14th.
"Triumphs and Laments" was originally produced as a 550-meter long frieze along the banks of the Tiber River in Rome. The gallery show includes the complete set of aquatint etchings and woodcuts relating to the frieze, two long maquettes that diagram its first processional, a set of monumental stencils, and a video highlighting the opening performance in Rome.
"In this work, Kentridge presents figures from a broad sweep of Italian history in a grand procession to represent the progress and follies of human endeavors. In this work, the artist has brought this theme to contemporary relevance with his images of the migrant boat people," said Joseph Ketner II, director of Emerson Urban Arts.
The gallery is open to the public and admission is free. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 2 to 7 pm.

Celebrate Women's History Month in Downtown Boston
Celebrate Women's History Month in Downtown Boston by visiting sites a diverse variety of sites with great significance to women's history in the United States.
Here are some noted historical locations of women's history within the BID's 34-block area. The following information has been provided by the Boston Women's Heritage Trail. Click here for more info about the Boston Women's Heritage Trail's tours.
Old City Hall (45 School St.) is the site where six women were elected -- by men -- to the Boston School Committee before they could vote in 1875.
Susanna Haswell Rowson, above, born in 1760, was a playwright and an actress at the Federal Street Theatre (Federal and Milk streets). She was the author of the first American best-selling novel, "Charlotte Temple, A Tale of Truth
." For five years following 1796, she performed 129 different parts in 126 productions, many of which she wrote herself. In 1797 she set up the Young Ladies Academy near the Theatre. The academy was one of the first to offer girls education above the elementary level and included instruction in music and public speaking.
When the Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.), above, the site of mass protest meetings in Revolutionary Boston, was slated for demolition a 100 years later, a group of women bought the building (but not the land) to protect it. Philanthropist Mary Tileston Hemenway, born in 1820, contributed more than half the sum needed to preserve it, becoming an early leader in historic preservation. Phillis Wheatley, born circa 1753, was the first African American poet to be published in book form, and was a member of OSMH.
Among the more well-known Boston women who attended the Federal Street Church (100 Federal St.) was abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman, above, born in 1806, who was a founder of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society. As an organizer and fundraiser, Chapman ran 22 yearly anti-slavery fairs in Boston beginning in 1834.

Suffolk University Names
Marisa Kelly 11th President
The Downtown Boston BID would like to congratulate Marisa Kelly on being named the 11th president of Suffolk University. Kelly had been the interim president for the last 20 months.
"I love this institution. I love Boston," said Kelly to the Boston Herald. "I want everybody to understand the value of a Suffolk education. I want them to understand that transformative opportunity exists here. Our students know that; our alumni know that, but we want the rest of the nation and the globe to know that."
Before joining Suffolk as provost in 2014, she served as provost at Ithaca College. Prior to her time in Ithaca, she was the dean and McQuinn Distinguished Chair of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of St. Thomas-Minnesota. She was also a faculty member and administrator for 12 years at the University of the Pacific in California. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Kansas, an MA in Political Theory from San Francisco State University, and a BA in Government from California State University at Sacramento. |

Robert Curry Named
BID Ambassador of the Year
The Downtown Boston BID recently named Robert Curry as the BID's Ambassador of the Year. As a dispatcher Robert performs a critical role in communicating with the Ambassadors who are working in the district.
"Robert is always thinking about how he can help Ambassadors do their job as best as possible. He was named Ambassador of the Year because of his overall performance, proactive communication to Ambassadors in the district and outstanding dedication to the company,
" said Steve Brookes, BID Clean & Hospitality Operations Director.
"I love being part of a team that works together to make Downtown Boston a great place," said Curry. "I like doing something that has a positive impact for the community."

Residents' Association Meeting
The Downtown Boston Residents' Association is holding a meeting tonight (Monday, March 12th) at Suffolk University's Modern Theatre starting at 7 pm. This meeting is open to the public.
District 2 Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn will discuss his vision and priorities for Downtown Boston and take questions from residents.

Shoveling, Parking and More
Whether you're a property owner, a homeowner or a resident with a car it's important to know about shoveling and parking regulations, snow emergencies and more. The City of Boston has a resourceful webpage providing all necessary info here, and below is important info to know for when the white stuff comes down.

Property owners must:
- Clear sidewalks within three hours of snowfall ending or three hours after sunrise if it snows overnight, and
- Clear at least a 42-inch-wide path for wheelchairs and strollers.
Do not shovel snow into the street or you can be subject to fines. Also please remember to:
- Remove ice to bare pavement or make as level as possible and treat with sand, sawdust, or similar material.
- Please clear any snow that may be blocking a handicap ramp, fire hydrant or catch basin.
- Don't leave snow or ice on stairways or fire escapes. All common means of exit must be clear in case of fire or another emergency.
What To Do With Your Car When It Snows:
During a snow emergency main roads need to be clear for plows and emergency vehicles. If you're parked on one of these main roads during a snow emergency, you may be ticketed and your vehicle may be towed. How do you know if you can't park on a street during a snow emergency? Check the signs posted on the street. Also,

Please also call the BID's dispatch line at 617-261-0066 to report sidewalks, handicapped ramps or other Downtown Crossing public ways that need to be shoveled. Our Ambassadors will be out in the snow 24 hours a day making sure the sidewalks are clear!

When you know severely cold weather is coming, remember to take steps to prepare. Please also check on your elderly or disabled neighbors, and take caution when using portable heating devices like space heaters. If you have an emergency please call 911.
