I hope you'll enjoy my forthcoming book, "Elbow Grease + Chicken Fat," filled with more ways to win through great marketing and branding. It's a fun read, and I think it can help entrepreneurs build successful businesses. Over the years, I have built several businesses, and my hope is that some of that knowledge will help others.

As the once best and largest
off-premise caterer in Western New York, I have paired the business advice with my fabulous recipes to help cement the business concepts. My book conveys the American Dream: How anyone in this country can become whatever they want with hard work and a never-give-up attitude. Hence the title: Elbow Grease + Chicken Fat.

When going off to an interview, consider your voice. I have attached a couple of snippets from magazines that might prove helpful. Enjoy.

Say It Louder or Lower?
by Rachel Bertsche
The New York Times June 30, 2013

"Women seeking leadership positions now have an alternative to leaning in: They can just lower their voices an octave. A recent study suggests that when choosing between hypothetical female candidates, both men and women preferred the lower (or more masculine) voice. Kathleen Dolan, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who specializes in women in politics, says this isn't an issue of gender. "Low voices are just more pleasing sounds--think Barry White versus Pee-wee Herman," she says.
I suggest to my clients that they hire a specialist consultant to teach them how to present better at interviews. A few tricks like the quote above can work wonders for winning new projects.

Is it better to be loved or feared? by Amy Cuddy and colleagues Susan Fiske, and Peter Glick
Harvard Business Review
July-August 2013

"Find the right level. When people want to project warmth, they sometimes amp up the enthusiasm in their voice, increasing their volume and dynamic range to convey delight. That can be effective in the right setting, but if those around you have done nothing in particular to earn your adulation, they'll assume either that you're faking it or that you fawn over everyone indiscriminately.
A better way to create vocal warmth is to speak with a lower pitch and volume, as you would if you were comforting a friend. Aim for a tone that suggests that you're leveling with people--that you're sharing the straight scoop, with no pretense or emotional adornment."

If you enjoyed these quotes, then I suggest that you get a subscription to the Sunday NY Times and the Harvard Business Review.
