Walk for Wamunyu
Every year, our students show their support for our greater St. John's community by participating in the "Walk for Wamunyu", an on-campus walk-a-thon to raise money for their pen pals in Kenya at the Mbaikini School and Mbaikini Special Needs School. Funds raised from past events have been used to construct a water tower, build chicken coops, and buy furniture; build and equip a community center with a technology lab; fund computer classes for students at our sister school, Mbaikini Primary; as well as make contributions toward the purchase of a school bus.
At this year's Walk for Wamunyu, our students worked hard to complete as many laps as they could, supported by high fives and shouts of encouragement from Mrs. Grosso, Mrs. Cramer, Mrs. Harden, special guests Mr. Dean and Dr. Runge, and all the wonderful parent volunteers who came out to help us. Mrs. Richardson had her support on full display, wearing a skirt made from cloth she purchased at a market in Machakos, Kenya. The cloth was a wax print which featured brilliant colors, and the skirt was hand made as a gift from our guide and Kenya Connect Field Director, James Musyoka. We learned that the red and black wrap is a fabric traditionally worn by the Masai tribe. The Masai are the people often featured in photos for their beautiful and brightly colored clothing.
After all of their hard work, our students were treated to a popsicle snack, which they enjoyed while catching their breath as they say amongst classmates and book buddies, celebrating a job well done.
Thank you so much Mrs. Cramer for putting all the work into planning and executing this great St. John's tradition, and a heartfelt thank you to all of the parents who donated their time to help with lap marking, pouring water, handing out popsicles, selling T-shirts, as well as setting up--and cleaning up after--this great event. Events like the Walk for Wamunyu are made even more special by the teachers, staff, and family members who join in to support or students and their goals as they spread our love across the world. This is just one of the things that makes our community so special and strong. Wonderful job too all our St. John's rafiki ("friends" in Swahili)!

Message from the Nurses
CDC is expecting this year’s flu season to be the worst season since the 2009 H1N1 flu season.
One of the 4 strains in the vaccine, H3N2, has mutated and the vaccine is only 32% effective against this strain. This is the strain that is making people ill.
Flu is rampant in the community now and this is early for Maryland. We have approximately 11 weeks left of flu season.
If your child has any flu like symptoms, please keep them home from school
.
If your child has a confirmed case of the flu, please let the Nurse’s Office know. Remind your children to practice good hand-washing and sneezing into their elbows.
Our nurses recommend getting the flu shot and if you have any questions or concerns to
contact them.
Signs and Symptoms of the flu include:
- Fever, or feeling feverish/chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue (tiredness)
- Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
