  • Pete Souza, White House photographer for Presidents Obama and Reagan, will give a lecture and presentation at 7 p.m. at the Lied Center. Free and open to the public. Read the news release.

  • Hot dog lunch for J-School students, faculty, staff, alumni and special guests. 11:30 a.m., Clarkson Gallery, Stauffer-Flint Hall.
  • William Allen White Day program, "The Future of Journalism" panel discussion with previous National Citation award winners and J-School students. 3:30 p.m., Ballroom, Kansas Union. Free and open to the public.

Faculty and staff
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas was quoted in the March 2018 ABA Journal in an article about the Student Press Law Center's New Voices initiatives all over the country intended to pass student free expression laws.

Nominations for the John Katich Award for Creativity are due to the dean's office by Monday, April 16. The Katich award goes to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. The award will be presented at the last faculty meeting of the year on May 4. 
Research and presentations
Doctoral student Liefu Jiang has been awarded a $5,000 Summer Research Scholarship by the Office of Graduate Studies. He also presented a paper at the AEJMC Midwinter Conference at the University of Oklahoma on March 2. Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski is co-author of the paper, "The effects of social media usage on Chinese students' acculturation in the United States."

Faculty and graduate students are invited to attend the next Research Brownbag to share their own project(s) and/or offer feedback to others from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 16 in Stauffer-Flint, Room 104.
 
The Diversity and Inclusion Action Group (DIAG) invites the submission of proposals for the 2018-2019 Applied Research Award. The award is open to faculty as well as doctoral candidates. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. April 23. Get the details.
Student news and opportunities
Senior Chandler Boese has been chosen to receive a $1,500 scholarship from ACES: The Society for Editing. Boese is editor-in-chief of the University Daily Kansan and a consultant for the university's writing center. For her third internship, Boese will be editing at the Dallas Morning News this summer. University Daily Kansan reporters Sean Collins and Darby Vanhoutan placed in the Top 20 in the Hearst Journalism Awards, Multimedia News category. Collins placed ninth for his package "Football's Biggest Headache," and VanHoutan tied for 18th  for her package "A Trip around the Wheel." 
The Journalism Student Ambassador Program is now accepting applications for 2018-2019. Ambassadors represent the J-School by giving tours to prospective students and assisting the recruiter and communications office in various tasks and events. The School of Journalism communications office and Student Leadership Board are offering J-School branded T-shirts for sale. Student Chloe Carlson created the design on the back, and alumna Allyson Maturey created the pocket design. The Comfort Colors brand shirt is available in ice blue or brick color for $19. You can order and pay online and you'll be notified when the shirts are ready for pickup in the J-School communications office, Room 210B, Stauffer-Flint Hall. Fellowships
The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is accepting applications for the 2018 VOICES program, open to currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students. The program is Aug. 5-11 during the 2018 AAJA National Convention in Houston. Students will be mentored by professional journalists and will be expected to produce and complete news assignments at the 2018 convention. Deadline is March 25. Learn more here.

The Tom Murphy Fellowship is designed to develop and enrich a recent KU graduate interested in pursuing a career in sports and entertainment marketing. This competitive position provides the opportunity to work at Octagon, a leading global marketing agency, and learn from top experts in the field. The candidate will work closely with a variety of divisions, including creative, research, media rights and sponsorship consulting to learn about the intricacies of sports and entertainment marketing. The six-month fellowship in Chicago runs from June 15 to Dec. 31, 2018, and pays $2,700 a month. Learn more here.

Scholarships and contests
Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is offering scholarships totaling at least $11,000 this year to deserving college sophomores, juniors and seniors planning careers in journalism. Download the flier to see what scholarships are available and to apply. A new scholarship has just been added that is not included on the flier. The Shull Memorial Scholarship will go to a student pursuing a degree in journalism and have demonstrated an interest about the coverage of arts and music.  

The School of Journalism is holding its first-ever competition for students to submit photos and videos representing the subject "Diversity and You." Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views of diversity as it affects them and others. Awards will be offered in each category: $400 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. Learn more here. 

The KU Advising Network & Undergraduate Studies is taking applications now for Advisor of the Year. A selection committee of students, faculty and staff will evaluate nominations on the evidence of effective advising qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding advisor. The Kansas Association of Broadcasters will award up to $2,000 in individual scholarships to next semester's juniors and seniors. Application deadline is May 1. Get the details. 
Events
Learn how to present your brand with intent and clarity at "Tell & Sell Your Story Workshop," on March 13 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 204, Stauffer-Flint Hall, with faculty member Michael Vrabac. Engagement is critical at all levels, and taking care of your audience is a must. Students will learn how communication -- with eyes, hands, body, voice, non-verbal and with words -- plays an important role in the way a message is received. The workshop will be limited to 16 participants, so RSVP to [email protected] to secure your position.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to a special event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the graduation of Jessie-Lea Messick Williams from KU. Messick Williams received a degree in journalism in 1918, and her family is commemorating the anniversary by awarding a scholarship. The featured speaker, Colleen McCain Nelson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and 1997 J-School graduate, will discuss women in journalism at 5 p.m. March 27 at the Oread hotel. If you would like to attend the event, you must RSVP to [email protected] by March 19.

American Public Square, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to changing the tone of public discourse through fact-based civil discussions, is hosting a panel discussion, "Fake News," at 6:30 p.m. March 13 at Unity Temple on the Plaza. J-School graduate and Pulitzer Prize winner Colleen McCain Nelson is one of the panelists. The event is free but registration is required



The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, in partnership with Park University, is presenting Baseball Book Notes "Double Play,"  at 10 a.m. April 7 at the museum in Kansas City, Missouri. The program includes historian James W. Johnson, author of The Black Bruins, chronicling the story of Jackie Robinson and other teammates for UCLA's football team in the 1940s. The second program includes photographers Ira Block and Byron Motley, who each have published collections of photographs from Cuba, featuring baseball and culture. Download the flier.
