Doctoral student Liefu Jiang has been awarded a $5,000 Summer Research Scholarship by the Office of Graduate Studies. He also presented a paper at the AEJMC Midwinter Conference at the University of Oklahoma on March 2. Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski is co-author of the paper, "The effects of social media usage on Chinese students' acculturation in the United States."

Faculty and graduate students are invited to attend the next Research Brownbag to share their own project(s) and/or offer feedback to others from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 16 in Stauffer-Flint, Room 104.

The Diversity and Inclusion Action Group (DIAG) invites the submission of proposals for the 2018-2019 Applied Research Award. The award is open to faculty as well as doctoral candidates. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. April 23. Get the details.

Senior Chandler Boese has been chosen to receive a $1,500 scholarship from ACES: The Society for Editing. Boese is editor-in-chief of the University Daily Kansan and a consultant for the university's writing center. For her third internship, Boese will be editing at the Dallas Morning News this summer. University Daily Kansan reporters Sean Collins and Darby Vanhoutan placed in the Top 20 in the Hearst Journalism Awards, Multimedia News category. Collins placed ninth for his package "Football's Biggest Headache," and VanHoutan tied for 18th  for her package "A Trip around the Wheel." 

The Journalism Student Ambassador Program is now accepting applications for 2018-2019. Ambassadors represent the J-School by giving tours to prospective students and assisting the recruiter and communications office in various tasks and events. The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is accepting applications for the 2018 VOICES program, open to currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students. The program is Aug. 5-11 during the 2018 AAJA National Convention in Houston. Students will be mentored by professional journalists and will be expected to produce and complete news assignments at the 2018 convention. Deadline is March 25. Learn more here.

The Tom Murphy Fellowship is designed to develop and enrich a recent KU graduate interested in pursuing a career in sports and entertainment marketing. This competitive position provides the opportunity to work at Octagon, a leading global marketing agency, and learn from top experts in the field. The candidate will work closely with a variety of divisions, including creative, research, media rights and sponsorship consulting to learn about the intricacies of sports and entertainment marketing. The six-month fellowship in Chicago runs from June 15 to Dec. 31, 2018, and pays $2,700 a month. Learn more here.

The School of Journalism is holding its first-ever competition for students to submit photos and videos representing the subject "Diversity and You." Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views of diversity as it affects them and others. Awards will be offered in each category: $400 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. Learn more here. 

The KU Advising Network & Undergraduate Studies is taking applications now for Advisor of the Year. A selection committee of students, faculty and staff will evaluate nominations on the evidence of effective advising qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding advisor. Learn how to present your brand with intent and clarity at "Tell & Sell Your Story Workshop," on March 13 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 204, Stauffer-Flint Hall, with faculty member Michael Vrabac. Engagement is critical at all levels, and taking care of your audience is a must. Students will learn how communication -- with eyes, hands, body, voice, non-verbal and with words -- plays an important role in the way a message is received. Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to a special event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the graduation of Jessie-Lea Messick Williams from KU. Messick Williams received a degree in journalism in 1918, and her family is commemorating the anniversary by awarding a scholarship. The featured speaker, Colleen McCain Nelson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and 1997 J-School graduate, will discuss women in journalism at 5 p.m. March 27 at the Oread hotel.
