"Making friends while serving God"

The week of January 1-7, 2018

The Baptism of Our Lord

'You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.'

Genesis 1:1-5; Psalm 29
Acts 19:1-7; Mark 1:4-11

The beloved

The day before Andy Dietsche was installed as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori led a day of reflection and prayer for diocesan clergy. The scripture she chose to focus on during our day together was Sunday's gospel.

Read that statement from God, she said. And imagine God speaks not only to Jesus but also to all of us in the church. We are the body of Christ.

Imagine we are that beloved by God. Imagine God is pleased with us. Imagine that love, that endorsement, that encouragement is intended for us.

The Presiding Bishop asked the clergy to think what that would be like. To think what fears and regrets we would have to set aside to believe that we are that beloved by God.

What a fantastic gospel for the first Sunday in 2018. What a reminder that God loves us and wants all good things for us. And what an inspiration with which to start a new year.

Happy new year!
