Rector's Ramblings

I finally had the chance to watch the film, All Saints this past weekend. All Saints tells the story of an Episcopal parish in Tennessee that was planning on closing down, but found new life instead. The parish had dwindled to small numbers and the diocese sent a priest to help the parish go through the equivalent of an ecclesiastical Hospice period. Instead, however, some Karen refugees from Burma showed up and the Church found itself in the middle of a resurrection story instead. The Karen refugees had been Anglicans, a persecuted minority, so they naturally found the closest Episcopal Church once they resettled.

The Karen refugees who had been resettled in the area were poor, so they could not do much to support the congregation's finances, but they did have skills as farmers. The Church turned its land into a working farm, which allowed the Church to feed the refugees and also support the church's budget, allowing the church to stay open; it remains open to this day, ten years later. It is a great story - a true story - about how the Gospel can accomplish amazing things when it is lived out.

Revival: Fearless Faith, Boundless Love

It was wonderful that parishioners from all over the Diocese were able to experience what they did this past weekend at Good Shepherd Church and Honeycreek. The Fearless Faith, Boundless Love Revival for the Diocese of Georgia, was a time of spiritual awakening and renewal for students and adults alike. All were inspired and moved by Bishop Curry's time with the students on Friday  evening, his sermons, the video conveying the amazing witness of Deaconess Alexander, and the awesome musical offerings. Members of Christ Church stayed well into the  afternoon experiencing a variety of activities that allowed them to reflect upon and process the experience of the revival, giving much needed peace to go and serve the Lord with selfless love for all!

To see videos from the day, go to the Diocesan Facebook page here.

Outreach

Church Docents Needed!

As Christians, we are enjoined to share our treasure with others. Christ Church Frederica is itself a treasure --historical and spiritual. It is one of the most visited sites on St. Simons Island, drawing travelers from many parts all year around. The church is kept open to them thanks to our docents.

We are currently seeking volunteers to serve as docents once a month on a weekday or weekend afternoon, in a 2:00 -5:00 pm shift. A brief training session is offered.

This is an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity to share the remarkable story of our church and to introduce it  to many others. If you are interested in joining our corps of Christ Church ambassadors, please contact Fred Collins at  912-222-2643.

Foods Needed for St. Athanasius Food Pantry

Please remember to bring your food donations for the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Food Pantry on the first weekend in February. One of the main food items that is especially needed now is cereal in regular sized boxes. It is in short supply. The p antry could also use canned pasta with meat, like ravioli, spaghetti-o's, etc. Thank you for your generosity!

Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies will be packing again on Wednesday, January 31st, at 10:00 am.All are welcome to join the packing line!  For more information about Backpack Buddies, contact Susan Shipman at susanshipman@att.net .

Souper Bowl Sunday - February 4th

The "Souper Bowl Sunday" soup fundraiser is coming up again and will "kick-off" on Sunday, February 4th . After all services we will be selling homemade soup in pints ($5) and quarts ($10) to raise money for our youth programs. Parents, students, and parishioners will provide the soup so this is a very profitable fundraiser! Soup will be available at the church and the parish house.

If you would like to make some homemade soup for this fundraiser or baked goods for the youth to sell, please contact Brad at 912-223-7276 or  bhamil@ccfssi.org

Dinnertime in the Kingdom of God
By John La Boone

"Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over."
                                                                 - Luke 9: 16-17

How does an Episcopal church become a church? For that matter, what makes anything a kind of church? Is it the building? Stained glass, pews, a steeple, a bell tower, a pulpit with a carved eagle attached to it? Does a building with a baptismal font, prayer books and hymnals become a church once it is blessed by a diocesan bishop? Interesting questions, but not ones that most people ask out loud. We just sort of know what's a church and what isn't... don't we?

Looking to the Heavens Above

Priest Associate, Fr. David Somerville, may have been reading the Eighth Psalm more frequently than for his own good. He has developed an interest in all the sky beholds to the naked eye. So he bought a pair of binoculars. The result: An interest in finding a fellowship of folks who would like to explore the cosmos once or twice per month with something more substantial than a pair of binocs. He is currently in conversation with the natural science department at the Costal Community College for a leader, whose first task would be to help Fr. David choose an affordable, but good quality telescope. The leader's second task would be to discuss with our group the remarkable beauty and diversity of planets in our solar system, the constellations of our sky through which the planets wander, and the structure of the Milky Way Galaxy. If you are interested in this kind of back yard astronomy, which provides wonderful quality time, for mothers and sons, fathers and daughters,  send an email note to Fr. David at  summerdave@aol.com. We would probably do well to have at least between six and twelve individuals committed and involved.

2018 Vestry Elections - January 27 & 28VestryElections

After each service this weekend, we will vote on eight candidates for the four open vestry slots. The candidates are: Brooke Bartlett, Rip Graham, Bernie Keele, Ellen Kuehm, John La Boone, Casey Lavin, Jane Thau and Steven Williams. Eligibility to vote is based on our parish rolls for "communicants in good standing." The current list will be posted at Christ Church and St. Ignatius. If you are not listed and feel that the omission is in error, please let us know. We will open voting AFTER each of our five weekend services. Voting after services (as opposed to before them) is particularly important on Sunday morning, as it allows the transition between the 8:00 and 9:15 am services to run smoothly. At all services, it also allows for a contemplative preparation for worship in the tight spaces of our church. Voting will take place at the churches only. There are no absentee ballots. The results of the election will be announced at the annual parish meeting and chili cook-off on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm.

Click here to read the biographies of each of this year's nominees.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return.
