We're joining forces with our four California URISA Chapters and the California Geographic Information Association to bring awesome education to the community in Palm Springs!   The Call for Presentation Proposals was just announced with submissions due on or before March 5. What will you present?



Our URISA Caribbean Chapter is re-energizing! Stay tuned for details on a late 2018 URISA Caribbean GIS Conference (likely Nov/Dec 2018).
Chapter Events
Many URISA Chapters are working on conferences and events. Coming up quickly are conferences hosted by URISA's Alaska Chapter, Alabama, Oregon and Washington Chapters.  Be sure to check out the online  Event Calendar  for information about chapter events and activities. 

The King County (Seattle, WA) GIS Center is also hosting several URISA workshops this spring.

Have you and your team improved the delivery and
qua lity of government services through the use of GIS?
Consider applying for a URISA Exemplary Systems in Government Award. 

Applications are due on or before June 4, 2018.  Submissions are invited in both Enterprise Systems and Single Process Systems categories.

Kara Utter Named Young Professional of the Year

URISA is pleased to announce that Kara Utter has been named URISA's Young Professional of the Year in recognition of her outstanding contributions as part of  URISA's Vanguard Cabinet. 

Kara is a GIS Analyst for Valley County, Idaho. She has been an active participant on the planning committee for GIS-Pro, URISA's annual conference, particularly with student outreach and young professional networking events. She is also the lead for the URISA Marketing Website Sub-Committee and is very active locally in the URISA Northern Rockies Chapter. Congratulations Kara!!

GIS Salary Survey

The Executive Summary of the 2017 GIS Salary Survey is available online. Stay tuned for the full publication with ample cross-tabulations and info.   Quick Hits from 2017:
  • The survey is based on 3,060 respondents who are employed full-time.
  • The average salary of survey respondents was $70,857 - an increase of 15% over the 2010 average of $61,540.
  • GISPs, on average, earned $10,000 more than non-GISPs.
  • A majority (57.7%) of respondents are employed within some level of government,  from local to federal agencies.
  • Most receive additional forms of compensation including health insurance, paid conference attendance, life insurance, paid training, pension/retirement plans and 401(s) plans.
  • They spend an average of 70.8% of their time performing geospatial tasks and work an average of 41.6 hours per week.
  • The minimum level of education required for their position is a Bachelor's degree.
  • They have an average of 13.5 years of professional experience and have been in their current position for an average of 6.8 years.
  • Less than half (42.5%) were GISPs.
  • Two-thirds were male and the average age of respondents was 40.5 years.
  • Most (90.4%) respondents were from the U.S. with the greatest concentration from the South Atlantic, Pacific, Mountain and West South Central regions.
GISP Exam Dates Announced
The next testing window for the  GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam®  as a part of the GISP Certification is scheduled for June 2-9, 2018.
