MNMC 2018
Biomedical grand challenges facing our society can be addressed at the scale of biology with Micro and Nanoscale technologies. These technologies hold great potential for diagnostics, therapeutics, enhancement of physiological function, disease management, or early monitoring and prevention. IEEE EMBS is sponsoring the fourth biennial Conference on Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine to foster interaction between scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and medical researchers in the context of real-world medical needs and issues. The Conference will promote vigorous and open dialogue towards groundbreaking solutions to previously unaddressed problems and cutting edge technologies for faster, more quantitative, and less expensive biomedical solutions using advances in Micro and Nanotechnology.

ESi: The Role of Biomedical Engineers in Litigation

Engineering Systems Inc (ESi) and the Winston-Salem EMB Student Club hosted a two-part seminar to better understand the role of biomechanics in litigation and office ergonomics. Dr. Amber Stern, PhD, senior consultant and practice group director, demonstrated several incident case studies and used a myth-buster approach to better understand what truly occurred. Senior consultant Dr. Mitch Garber, M.D., explained the causes of the most common office discomforts and how to remedy them. The evening concluded with a social dinner that was made possible by ESi, EMB Society, and the Winston-Salem IEEE Section.

Cyber-Attacks to Devices Threaten Data, Patients
CYBERSECURITY RISKS COME WITH THE TERRITORY: HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.
Every device that contains a computer component is open to a cybersecurity attack, and that potential escalates when the device is connected to another device, to an information technology (IT) network, or to the internet. This potential is especially troublesome when it comes to medical devices, because patient care hangs in the balance. What do developers need to know about possible threats to their medical devices, and how they can keep their devices out of harm's way? To find out, IEEE Pulse contacted three cybersecurity experts: Anura S. Fernando, principal engineer of the Medical Software and Systems Interoperability Health Sciences Division at the global science-safety organization UL; Kevin Fu, Ph.D., associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan, and chief scientist of Virta Labs of Seattle, Washington; and George Gray, chief technology officer and vice president of software development at Ivenix of North Andover, Massachusetts.
