A Message From The Superintendent's Office...
Dear Falcon Community,
There are approximately six weeks before the
March 13, 2018 referendum
on the construction of a new, additional middle school to offset the overcrowded conditions in our existing middle school. A new middle school is the first step in addressing the over capacity of our elementary, middle and high schools. The middle school is our most pressing need and it is extremely important that we complete the middle schoo in order to begin to address the overcrowded conditions in our high school and elementary schools.
In order to vote on March 13, residents must be registered prior to that date. Information on how to register is available on our website (click

). You can also vote by mail, even if you are going to be home on March 13. Information on obtaining a ballot to vote by mail can be obtained by clicking
here
. In order to vote my mail, your application must be received by March 6, 2018.

THE POLAR EXPRESS STOPS AT OAK TREE SCHOOL
In Ms. Sceusa's second grade class, they read The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg, aloud. Afterward, the class was tasked with a STEM challenge! The students constructed bridges for the Polar Express train to cross, only using popsicle sticks and masking tape for building materials. All bridges were measured to see which was the longest that could hold a toy train; one group built a 28-inch bridge that was suspended between two desks!
In Ms. Shea and Ms. Goldstein's kindergarten classes, they also were visited by The Polar Express! The conductor, otherwise known as Mr. Kevin, led the Polar Express train of kindergarteners around the halls of Oak Tree School. Classes of hard-working students took a break and came out to wave to the "train" as it made its way around the building. The activity began with students listening to the story in their classroom. The students then used boxes to design their own "cars" for the train. The students worked diligently to put the events of the story in the proper sequence. They then made a giant graph demonstrating which students liked to have marshmallows in their hot chocolate, integrating their mathematics skills. What a wonderful experience for the kindergarteners at Oak Tree!

Mill Lake Teachers Jessica Mastoris and Dominique Walters showed their appreciation for their Rave Reader and Monroe Township Resident Annette Levine by attending her 90th Birthday Party! We are so lucky at Mill Lake School to have community volunteers and partnerships like the one we have with Ms. Levine who provide wonderful literacy experiences for our students throughout the school year. On behalf of the entire school community, Happy Birthday Ms. Levine!
Students from Ms. Fletcher and Mrs. Friedeman's class and Mrs. Bartus' class teamed and buddied up to complete some Winter STEM Challenges. Students were challenged to make the best "hills" for "sledding" and tried to make the biggest "snowball"! Not only did students learn new concepts about engineering and the design process, but also they made new friends along the way!

MODEL UNITED NATIONS AT MTHS
MTHS's Model United Nations ("MUN") Delegation participated in the 47th annual MUN Conference, held at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, PA. MUN is a three-day experiential learning conference, held the first weekend in January, designed to introduce students to the operation and structure of the United Nations while providing them with an opportunity to actively learn about world cultures and debate issues of international importance. Our students' participation this year (as in years past) was outstanding, and as such, the MTHS Delegation was awarded Outstanding Delegation! See photo below. This after having missed the first day of the conference due to the weather! The following students earned individual accolades:

(There are over 2000 student participants at conference. Only about 30 get elected as Chairs and 20 for the Conference on National Affairs (CONA), which will be held in North Carolina this summer.)

year at Montgomery High School in Skillman on November 18

The GSA recorded notes and eventually shared their new found knowledge with members who were unable to attend.With great sandwiches,delicious cookies,and lots of laughter, strangers from across the state became family through love,appreciation,and self-respect.Underclassmen and upperclassmen alike look forward to the Gay, Lesbian,and Straight Education Network's GSA forum that will take place in 2018.

GROUP SUMMER SCHOLARS RESEARCH PROGRAM
An excellent opportunity is being offered to high school students interested in STEM fields this summer at Kean University - the
Group Summer Scholars Research Program.
The Group Summer Scholars Research Program (GSSRP) is a 6-week, hands-on research experience aimed at attracting and developing talented students who are interested in pursuing an education in a STEM field. Upon entering the program students are divided into small research teams that are paired with a faculty mentor conducting authentic scientific research in Analytical Chemistry, Virtual Reality & Scientific Visualization, Microbiomes & Bioinformatics, Cancer Biology, Computational Mathematics and Modern Drug Discovery. Students learn how to conduct basic and applied research during this program and develop a true appreciation of the scientific research process while contributing first hand to the acquisition of new scientific knowledge.
The 2018 GSSRP runs from July 9 - August 16 and applications are now being accepted. The application deadline is
March 30th

GOOGLE EXPEDITIONS AUGMENTED REALITY
S
ome students at Barclay Brook and Brookside had an amazing, once in a lifetime learning opportunity. A trainer from Google came to our school to demo brand new Google Education software! Students were led on exciting augmented reality expeditions in search of dinosaurs, exploring down on the ocean floor, into the mouth of a volcano and out into the solar system (to name just a few!). This software is in early development and is not available to the public at all. We are among some of the very first schools to pioneer this program!

Oak Tree Students Travel to the 70's

Day of School was not just an ordinary day of school at Oak Tree! Miss Pugliese, Miss Synarski, and Miss Kirner's classes traveled back in time to celebrate the 70
th
day of learning with a 70's themed day. The students were invited to dress as if they were from the 70's and teachers dressed too! The teachers decorated their classroom with 70's style décor, and created learning activities to go along with the day. Students read nonfiction articles about the decade. Students chose to learn about fashion, politics, or music in the 1970's. Then, students answered RACE questions about their topic, and worked in small groups to create a short visual presentation using classroom technology to share their learning with their classmates. Additionally, students completed a QR code scavenger hunt in their classrooms which allowed them to see photos of 1970's fashion, hear clips of 1970's music, and record interesting facts about the time period. Next, students took "groovy" pictures in a 70's themed photo booth, and used their photo for a short 70
th
day craft. The craft asked students to reflect on the seven most interesting things about 3
rd
grade so far. Finally, the three classes joined together during the last five minutes of the school day for a celebratory "disco dance party," to celebrate the awesome 70 days of learning. We had fun celebrating the 70
th
