Perseverance
"This was wonderful work, but I need to say, I am most impressed with your perseverance. I know you had some challenges through all of this, but you just never gave up."
This week my son, Jon, defended his dissertation (successfully) and earned his PHD. I just couldn't be happier for him. But what touched my heart most, was reflected in the comment quoted above, made by a professor on his committee that day, because thirty years ago Jon was a little boy who couldn't read. (As he says, I have told everyone in the country this story:)
But it is true. Preschool went relatively smoothly. His teacher said he was on target except maybe his cutting skills were a little weak... no problem, I thought, so he won't be a hairdresser. In my "mom perception" he was simply a delightful child.
But wiser educators saw something that was more complicated in his learning style. As we came to understand that, we changed schools, got tutoring, and spent a lot of time those early years learning how he learned. By middle school he was on track. What I remember, though I don't think he does, are the many hours spent drilling vocabulary, inventing word games and reading. And I remember very clearly saying to him, "You can do anything anyone else can, you will just have to work a little harder." This week I heard that echoed in, "You never gave up..."
I think that is the virtue of perseverance, also known as grit.
"Grit," Angela Lee Duckworth says is, "passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint."
Grit, perseverance, whatever you call it, is to make the choice everyday not to give up. And not giving up creates our character and shapes our soul, and that means more than any achievement we may accomplish.

This week we continued to discuss how we can bring about positive change in the world. We found that two feet are better than one. The US Bishops call it the
Two Feet of Love in Action
. Read more about this, and see a couple photos, on the
Middle School Blog.
Coming up, on February 18 & 19 we are pleased to be able to host Melanie from
Your Choice to Live, Inc. This is one part of our parish response to the opioid addiction crisis in Waukesha County.
Melanie will share her daughter Alexis's story on how one choice to experiment with drugs can have devastating consequences. Melanie's goal is to share her story so that other families won't have to experience what she did.
This presentation will take place in connection with the Family Program classes but is meant for all parish 6th through 8th graders and their parents. In order to prepare the space and supplies, it would be helpful if we knew how many to expect for each day. Please email

Family Program
Our next programs are February 4 and 5, 2018.
Most Reverend Jeffrey R. Haines, Auxiliary Bishop of Milwaukee
was
our speaker Sunday morning.
His sister Ann was unable to join him because their mother is in Hospice. We pray for their mother and their family. He spoke on how their parents nurtured them in their faith.
Monday's parent program was a session facilitated by Deacon Dennis Petrie and Dr. Doug Meske on the gift of Silence.
We continued our Family Challenge to get to know Jesus through Scripture this week. Here are some of the words families sent us when they read about the Baptism of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. We'd love to hear your feedback on the positive changes you are experiencing as you continue to develop the habit of reflecting on the Bible. Please share your thoughts on the
Family Program Blog.
This week at Family Program we also watched a video with a good overview of the Bible. Watch it again here.
Dr. Kathie Amidei is putting together a panel of parents for an adult session. What questions do you have for parents on the topics of raising faith-filled kids in our current world.
Email Kathie with your questions.

POEM: Perseverance
When all the world is looming dark
And things seem not so clear,
When shadows seem to hover 'round
Lord, may I persevere.
When it seems everything's been tried
And there's no way to go,
Just let me keep remembering
Sometimes the journey's slow.
I may just need to stop and rest
Along the path I trod,
A time to try to understand
And have my talk with God.
As I gain new strength to carry on
Without a doubt or fear,
Somehow I know things will be right,
And so, I persevere.
