SPC Grad on Front Lines in Our Community
SPC Police Academy Grad
Juanita O'Hara
Every morning Juanita looks at a photo of herself meeting two police officers as a child. For as long as she can remember, Juanita wanted to be a cop. In 2014, Juanita started her career as a dispatcher for the Tarpon Springs Police Department; however tragedy struck during her very first shift. Juanita was the dispatcher for Officer Charles Kondek the night he was fatally shot while on duty. "I learned so much that night, I realized how quickly things can change," said Juanita.

In mourning with the entire Tampa Bay Law Enforcement community, Juanita learned what it meant to be part of the "Thin Blue Line" and felt support all around her. This experience prompted her to follow her dreams and enroll in SPC's Police Academy. Juanita was awarded the Tampa Bay Area Chiefs of Police Association Law Enforcement Scholarship through the SPC Foundation which paid for the full cost of her Police Academy training. "It was really humbling to be chosen as a scholarship recipient. It helped me keep everything under control financially but also has allowed me to be part of something larger than myself," said Juanita. Through this scholarship Juanita has been able to network with Tampa Bay Police Chiefs and has found a new job as a Patrol Officer for the Temple Terrace Police Department. She is proud to be serving the Tampa Bay area and is excited to put her training and experience to work in the field.

New Scholarship to Meet the Growing Need for Nurses in Florida
Dr. Whittaker (L) with Betty Gaston and Ken Channer at the
2017 Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon.
A quiet and thoughtful man, Dr. Gerald Whittaker is making an enormous impact with his recent gift of $50,000 to establish the Dr. Gerald F. Whittaker Endowed Scholarship for Nursing at the SPC Foundation. Dr. Whittaker was inspired by his beloved sister Ruby who spent her career caring for others as a nurse.

St. Petersburg College is preparing nursing students with the experience, skills and credentials necessary to meet the growing demand for nurses in Florida. The College of Nursing offers Associate and Baccalaureate degree programs as well as programs for current licensed practical nurses and paramedics to transition to become Registered Nurses. Scholarships like Dr. Whittaker's create opportunities for more students to pursue this rewarding career.
Poetry on the Trail
Students discover poetry on Seminole Campus' interactive Natural Habitat Trail.
Take a stroll along the 200-yard boardwalk on SPC's Seminole campus and you will experience a slice of wild Florida teeming with native trees, plants and animals. You will also find poetry about the natural world. Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau and many contemporary poets have found inspiration in the swamplands of Florida and SPC Communications Professor Kyle Pierson looks to share their work through an outdoor poetry exhibit.

While enjoying their walk, visitors can use their phones to scan QR codes producing poetry to accompany the sights and sounds of nature. Pierson relishes the chance to share poetry with the campus' visitors, "I like to think of my poetry QR codes as guerrilla culture on the Natural Habitat Trail."

The general public is encouraged to visit the trail and Pierson says, "With poems at their fingertips, I hope visitors will be inspired by the words of some early American authors who loved the swamp."
