Superintendent Search Update
Message From District 20 Board of Education President, Heather Weishaar

At the December board meeting, the District 20 Board of Education selected BWP and Associates to lead the candidate search. On Monday, January 22, representatives from BWP met with Keeneyville Education Association (KEA) representatives and administration, to collect information on the qualities and skills they desire in our next superintendent. 

An online survey is available to collect information from all stakeholders and can be completed by clicking the links provided below. This survey will be open until January 28. 


BWP and  Associates will provide  a brief update on the  search process at the board meeting on January 25. Updates regarding the search will be shared on the District 20 website and in future e-newsletters. The new superintendent will begin on July 1, 2018.

District 20 Board of Education News 
December Board Meeting 
The Keeneyville District 20 Board of Education held a regular board meeting on Thursday, December 21, 2017. Board Briefs from the meeting can be found below. The next regular meeting of the District 20 Board of Education will be held on Thursday, January 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Spring Wood Middle School Library. The meetings are videotaped and can be viewed  here

Highlights: 
  • A Board Salute was presented to Jenny Yockey from Friendly Ford for her work on behalf of the Bloomingdale Roselle Rotary to secure 81 new winter coats for students. Jenny (center) is pictured with Board President, Heather Weishaar and Superintendent, Dr. Connolly. 
The Board of Education approved the following items: 
  • Approval of Wintrust as a Direct Depository
  • Approval of SSCIP Contract Renewal
  • Approval of the 2018 - 2019 School Calendar
  • Approval of Support Staff Salary Adjustment 2017-2018

District 20 News and Announcements 
Twitter Challenge Recap
On December 11, Instructional Coach, Jen Engstrom, launched a Twitter Challenge to encourage staff members to post to the social media site using daily prompts. 

During this time, social media engagement increased as staff members shared their favorite quotes, reading material and classroom projects. After the data was collected the following Twitter accounts stood out for: 

Promethean Board Installation Complete
In early January, the last of the Promethean panels were installed. All three schools now have access to 81" whiteboards with multi-touch functions that also offers a dry-erase surface. Combined with educational software, Promethean whiteboards help create an engaging and interactive learning experience for students. 





















Literacy DuPage Seeks Volunteers*
Literacy DuPage is currently seeking tutors to teach English to adults. An orientation session will be held on January 25 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Spring Wood Middle School. This 90-minute session will provide volunteers with details on how to get started as a tutor. For more information, please visit www.literacydupage.org or call us at (630) 416-6699. Students Continues to Prepare for Upcoming Competition 













Third, fourth and fifth grade students from Greenbrook and Waterbury are continuing to prepare for the Science Olympiad competition by participating in weekly after school activities. Current topics have included bridge building, investigating boiling points of various items and solving mysteries. Students, under the direction of Jana Stevens,  will compete on February 28 in Arlington Heights. 

Fifth Grade Beginners Band Hosts First Concert of the School Year
The Fifth Grade Beginners Band Concert was held on December 18. Under the direction of Teresa Hill, the band is comprised of students from Greenbrook and Waterbury Elementary Schools. While the students had been practicing for weeks, this was their first joint performance. The students will also perform on March 5 and May 31 at Spring Wood Middle School at 7:00 p.m.

Early Childhood Center (ECC)
A Visit from the Poplar Creek Library 
On December 22, preschool students participated in a special storytelling program provided by the Poplar Creek Library. A morning and afternoon session was held which allowed students to listen to stories and participate in interactive activities.

Student Recognition 
Pictured above are the December guests invited to a special lunch with Principal Gustafson. Pizza with the Principal is one of the positive behavior rewards students can earn with Gator Gotcha tickets in the school's PBIS program.  

Spring Wood Middle School  
Winter Assembly Highlights Music, Positive Behavior, Volunteer Efforts and a Farewell to the Carpeted Gym 

On December 21, Spring Wood hosted an all school assembly prior to dismissing for winter break. During the day, students had an opportunity to bid a final farewell to the old gym floor by signing the carpet. During the assembly, the choir and band performed and students were recognized for positive behavior by participating in a pie in the face activity with the staff winners from the No-Shave November contest. Money raised from the contest will be donated to a student who is suffering from cancer.

Gym Ribbon Cutting
On January 18, a ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the new gym floor. A contest was held the week prior to allow students to rename the gym. In the end, the winner was (drum roll...) OCG (Old Carpeted Gym)! Hanover Park Mayor, Rodney Craig, attended the event and cut the ribbon. Attendees received a goodie bag with a small piece of the carpet. Board Vice President, Sara Bruno and Board Members, Terry Walloch and Jennifer Kuban were in attendance. Pictured far right is District 20 Director of Operations/Treasurer, Wendy Flaherty. 

S WMS Fights Cancer
Students and staff members created a hope wall made out of ribbons in honor of those affected by cancer. 

Music News 
Choir Field Trip to Lake Park High School 
On January 18, members of the Spring Wood Choir, under the direction of Logan Andrews, participated in the Fourth Annual Jr. Choral Festival at Lake Park High School. @LPHSCHOIR
posted on their Twitter feed, "The future of of LP Choir is bright!" The students practiced during a daytime field trip and returned for an evening performance for parents. 

Winter Concert Highlights
On December 14, the Spring Wood Concert Band, Choir and Symphonic Band performed during an evening concert. Click here to view highlights from the concert. The band is under the direction of David Hellyer and the choir is under the direction of Logan Andrews.

Wow Factor
In December, Waterbury hosted its first inaugural Wow Factor Talent Show. In total, 33 acts were performed including two surprise acts from staff members. A wide range of talent was demonstrated including dance, martial arts, comedy routines and magic tricks. Click here to see highlights from the performances.
