Thank you to all who participated in the green/red dress down day for charity last Monday. St. Patrick and St. Joseph were surely smiling down! The money raised will go to Wheatland Farm, the therapeutic riding school run by Irish tenor Mark Forrest and his wife. Please see information on this wonderful ministry at WheatlandFarm.org.

It is hard to believe that our Lenten journey is almost at an end, and Easter is just around the corner. Next Thursday, March 29, is an early release day with no Extended Day. Please join us this Friday at 2:30pm for Stations of the Cross, and next Wednesday, March 28 at 2:15pm for the annual Living Stations.

When we return after Easter we will be joined by the Design for Excellence visiting team, beginning on Tuesday, April 10. Please keep us all in your prayers as we wrap up the re-accreditation process.

Have a blessed week.

Kirk Cameron: CONNECT

CONNECT with Kirk Cameron, is a great video about parenting in the age of Social Media. What I loved most about this presentation was it's candor and hopeful tone!
CONNECT  doesn't dismiss the larger problems and very real dangers that technology has presented to our kids and to us as parents, but addresses the tough issues head on.
It also speaks hope and power into what can be an overwhelming situation and which oftentimes feels like a battle with our kids, but is really the battle for our kids!

CONNECT engages on these levels and I highly recommend this video for fathers, mothers, grandparents,
educators and anyone working with children today!
So,come be informed, equipped and inspired by this film!

It is playing on March 24 at Fairfax Town Center Theatre, OX Rd. Fairfax and the Hoffman 22 Theater in Alexandria.

Tantrums

Managing children can be a challenge. Keeping the peace while keeping your cool may seem impossible at times. But whether you are reacting to an occasional temper flare-up or a pattern of outbursts, managing your own anger when things get heated will make it easier to teach children to do the same.

To help tame a temper, try to be your child's ally - you are both rooting for your child to triumph over the temper that keeps leading to trouble.

While your own patience may be frayed by angry outbursts, opposition, defiance, arguing, and talking back, it is during these episodes that you need your patience most. Of course you feel angry, but what counts is how you handle that.

Reacting to children's' meltdowns with yelling and outbursts of your own will only teach them to do the same (and actually is associated with an increase in children's negative behaviors). But keeping your cool and calmly working through a frustrating situation lets you show - and teach - appropriate ways to handle anger and frustration.

Let us say you hear your children fighting over a toy in the other room. You have ignored it, hoping that they would work it out themselves. But the arguing turns into screaming and soon you hear doors slamming, the thump of hitting, and crying. You decide to get involved before someone gets really hurt.

By the time you arrive at the scene of the fight, you may be at the end of your own rope. After all, the sound of screaming is upsetting, and you may be frustrated that your kids aren't sharing or trying to get along. (And you know that this toy they are fighting over is going to be lost, broken, or ignored before long anyway!)

The best way for you to react is with your own self-control intact. Teaching by example is your most powerful tool. Speak calmly, clearly, and firmly - not with anger, blame, harsh criticisms, threats, or putdowns.

Of course, that is easier said than done. But remember that you are trying to teach your children how to handle anger. If you yell or threaten, you will model and ingrain the exact kinds of behavior you want to discourage. Your children will see that you're so angry and unable to control your own temper that you can't help but scream - and that won't help them learn not to scream.

There will not be an issue of the Buzz next week. I hope that everyone has a very joyful Easter and Spring Break! When we get back from break, submissions will be due on MONDAYS at 5pm. It's very important that you get your submissions in on time, or I won't be able to get them in until the following week. Please keep sending in your submissions! I accept submissions from teachers, staff, and parents. If you know of something interesting going on in our community, or want to give a shout out to someone at the school, I'd love to add it to the Buzz. I especially enjoy pictures. Please contact Mrs. Rowley to make sure that we have permission to publish pictures of every student in the picture. Pictures need to be less than 5MB. Thanks so much!
