WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello Fellow and Future WTS Colleagues,
March is Women's History Month, so I thought a look at how women have contributed to the transportation field might be fun. Turns out, it was both fun and educational!
The U.S. Department of Transportation has published an outline, Timeline of Women in Transportation History, detailing women who have taken chances, broken barriers, and raised the bar on women's achievements, since the birth of America. The timeline includes hundreds of women involved in various modes and aspects of transportation, from horse and buggy (horse detacher and vehicle brake invented and patented by Annie Chilton in 1891) to spacecraft missions (first woman to command the International Space Station - Peggy Whitson in 2007).
In Texas, Leah Moncure became the first female registered engineer, after receiving a civil engineering degree from the University of Texas-Austin in 1937. Ms. Moncure focused on road design and research during her 32-year career.
I could regale you with more tidbits, such as contributions women have made to aviation, transit and railroads. However, it's time to close for this month.
Next month, I hope to talk about the WTS Student Chapter and the ideas you have about how we can enhance our mentoring program. If you haven't submitted your ideas, do it now!

The Scoop On Scholarships
 Recipients of the 2017-2018 WTS Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter's six local scholarships were announced recently and will be honored at the Annual Awards Banquet on April 20, 2018.
According to Scholarship Committee Chair, Daphne King, P.E., "There were many applicants this past year. College and high school counselors, in addition to WTS Chapter members, did a good job of getting the word out", she noted.
The Chapter awards six, $2,500 scholarships each year to graduate, undergraduate, community college, and high school students. Historically, scholarships have been awarded to students going to schools represented in Oklahoma and North Texas. The WTS Oklahoma Chapter has recently established its scholarship program, so WTS DFW Chapter will no longer award scholarships to students from Oklahoma schools. Scholarships to colleges, such as Texas A&M, are awarded by the WTS Houston Chapter. All scholarships are possible through generous contributions from our corporate members, and through our fundraising events.
Past applicants have backgrounds in civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering, as well as urban planning, public policy, public safety, and emergency response.
More than $100,000 worth of scholarships have been awarded, since the Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter was formed. That amount includes four, $2,500 scholarships exclusively funded by Gorrondona Associates since 2014. Moving forward this scholarship with will be renamed, the WTS DFW Chapter High School Scholarship.

FEBRUARY PROGRAM RECAP
  A great turnout crowd listened on February 22, 2018 to a panel of experts about what's on the horizon for transportation. Thanks to Kathy Bridwell with the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (soon to be Trinity Metro), Timothy McKay, P.E., with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), and Norma Glasscock with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for their insights into the future of mobility efforts in the region. The breakfast meeting was conducted jointly with the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) Dallas.

Proceeds from this banquet support women pursuing careers in transportation fields through scholarships funds and chapter professional development programs. The networking reception begins at 6:00 p.m. and the banquet kicks off at 7:00 p.m at The Westin Galleria Dallas.
