FIRST Robotics Season Underway
On Saturday January 6th, STEM's FRC (First Robotics Competition) team joined other teams across the state for the kick-off event and reveal of this year's challenge. Teams have a six-week build season, at the end of which they must bag up their robot until the competition in March. STEM's FRC team, Team Impulse, is hard at work designing and building a robot to compete.

The challenge for this year is POWER UP . Click HERE to learn more about this year's competition!

The Colorado Regional will take place March 21-24 at the University of Denver, and is open to the public. Please come by and support our team!

FRC Team and Children's Hospital

Did you know that part of our FIRST Robotics (FRC) program includes Sewing? Thanks to one of our FRC mentors, Jack Rumple, our team has access to an industrial sewing machine and instruction. This past December, the team made and donated handmade pillowcases to Children's Hospital. The outreach allowed them to learn sewing skills for their upcoming season - they can now make bumpers, banners, and items for the team's robot. Thank you to our FRC team for their outreach and commitment to helping kids in our area!
"Into the Woods Jr" Theatre Production Next Month!

Don't miss STEM's Production of "Into the Woods Jr" next month at Highlands Ranch High School! The cast and crew has been rehearsing for months - it is bound to be a great time! The show is February 13th and 14th. You can purchase tickets online HERE or at the door as available.
Middle School Basketball

The season is underway for middle school basketball! STEM has 3 teams participating in the HRCA (Highlands Ranch Community Association) boys league, spanning grades 6-8. Teams practice once a week and compete in games each weekend. Thank you to our dedicated parent coaches!
Destination Imagination Supply Drive

STEM's 6th grade DI team and the animals at The Humane Society at South Platte Valley need your help! We are running a drive to collect items for the animals. The drive will be held from January 12th to January 25th. We are requesting: wet dog and cat food, rags, bleach, postage stamps, hand sanitizer, and Dawn dish soap. Please drop the items off at any of the school offices in the marked boxes. Thank you for helping us!
Elementary Craft Club

Elementary students in grades 2nd-5th are invited to join the new session of our five-week craft club led by Ms Hutton! The group will create a new project each week! The club starts February 13th. Click HERE to sign up.
Canvas in the Classroom

Elementary students, join us for some painting fun! In just 2 hours, a Gallery Guide will instruct students through painting a fun piece of art they will be proud of! Jack Rumple

In our after-school programs, students get a chance to explore new passions, gain new skills, and learn from real-world professionals. Jack Rumple, a Lockheed Martin Systems Engineer, got involved with our FRC Team (FIRST Robotics Competition) a couple of years ago, and is one of the mentors that team members learn from each week. After hearing about STEM on Colorado Public Radio, Jack reached out to see how he could get involved. He visited on the same day the FRC team was meeting. "It looked like a group that I could share my experiences with, and they were happy to have some extra help," he says.

Jack says his favorite part of being a mentor at STEM is watching students find solutions to problems they are struggling with. " I try not to stand over a group and give out answers. It isn't realistic and doesn't prepare students for the problems they will encounter in the future. It is hard to sometimes watch a group of students heading down a wrong path, but I've found that we learn more from our failures, than from our successes."

"I remember when I was their age and there were very few people (peers and teachers) who I felt like I could talk to about my interest in technology or engineering who would understand. It is great to find a learning environment where those interested in technology and engineering can find like minded peers and teachers who can encourage and accelerate that excitement."

Outside of his work as a Systems Engineer, Jack is also a parachute rigger, licensed to maintain and repair skydiving equipment. After finding an interest in skydiving, he was interested in learning how the equipment worked and how it has been improved. "I guess in a way, parachute rigging is the closest thing to engineering within the sport," he says.
