We have discovered that people are nervous about talking to their colleagues about the union, and about union membership. The most common reason for the fear is that people don't believe they have all the answers to questions that might come up.
I have great news for you! YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW ALL THE ANSWERS! And, in some ways, it's better if you don't. When you don't know the answer to your colleague's question, it gives you the perfect reason to talk to them again - get the answer and get back to them!
From Secrets of a Successful Organizer:
Organizing involves a lot more listening than talking. Try the 80/20 rule - listen 80 percent of the time, talk 20 percent. Or at least get your share down to a third: you have two ears and one mouth, so use the proportionately...
"You have to listen," says Maria Martinez, who was the chief steward in [a] meatpacking plant...where members organized against harassment. "It's really important to let people let out their feelings and for them to see that someone cares abut what they have to say. then you can ask them, 'What do you think we should do about it?' You could say, 'I think we should do this,' but I've learned it's more effective when the ideas come out of them."

"Increased empathy and understanding for the least understood and most judged members of our community is the dominant theme of my vision for the future of the Fox Cities. In my view, any measure that seeks to protect, support and understand those who have faced the greatest financial, physical, health-related and emotional difficulties is not only a kindness but a necessity."

Thank you WEAC Region 3 Members & Staff!
This year's Blanketing Brown County Drive collected 2,410 items. Most of the items were blankets, but also included other items such as sleeping bags, hats, mittens and boots that helped keep Brown County individuals and families warm this winter.
The donations were distributed to a record 42 programs with the largest recipients being the New Community Shelter and 10 programs of the Green Bay Area Public School District: the McKinney-Vento Homeless Student Program, Head-Start and Community Caring Closets at Green Bay middle and high schools.

The Dennis Muehl Grant can help!
This grant was created from memorial contributions following Dennis Muehl's death in October 1995. Dennis Muehl was the first Director of Bayland Teachers United, our area's first Uniserv. This grant is open to all WEAC Region 3 members and staff. $300 in grants are awarded annually.
If you are a dues paying member of WEAC Region 3, and you want to attend a grant-qualifying activity that relates to building the Union, Political Action, Public Relations, Membership Training, or the like, then please consider applying for the Dennis Muehl Grant.
