The Christian Caller

March 9, 2018

Julie's Jar
Last Sunday I asked the gathered community to finish this prompt: "The purpose of the church is....and my part in it is...." Thank you to everyone who thought about this and who wrote something. Over the next few Caller issues, I'll be sharing all of them without reference to who wrote them.

There are some overarching themes: radical welcome, sharing God's love in deed and word beyond our walls. There was also great variety among the responses. At first, that variety gave me pause because I felt it first as expectation. How can we possibly be all this to so many? Then I rejoiced because it is what you experience the church to be. I rejoiced because it demonstrates we can be differ in our perspective yet still be held together. I rejoiced because I was reminded each of us has a piece of the canvas and the beauty of the church is not captured by anyone of us alone.

Here are some of the responses. More will be on the way in the future. As you read through them, you may recognize yours. I hope all of you will continue to reflect on this and talk to other people inside and outside church about "the purpose of the church is...." Believe me, plenty of people who never attend church have definite opinions on it.

To make Christ known, [to be] a place of worship & fellowship with one another.

To provide fellowship and spirituality to others, learning from others, helps meet our needs for daily living.

A community to embrace all who are needing family and belonging. I see my role or purpose as a welcoming servant.

To provide a place to worship God together. [For] fellowship with other Christians. To renew and inspire our focus. To share our caring for one another. To remember Jesus and his great sacrifice through the act of communion.

To prove God's people a place to worship him. To give us a place for fellowship.

Community. Family. To uphold the 2nd most important commandment: love thy neighbor as you love yourself. Checks and balances; accountability. Teamwork, because no one can do everything all alone (that's how we were designed to operate by God). My place is to Smile, hug, lead somehow (even if it's a small task or project) be present to anyone that is here in our church, too.

To be a place where all people find welcome, acceptance and can grow closer to God. My place is to welcome and accept all people and share our journeys together.

To share God's love with the world. To live at peace with expectation.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Reiki Share - March 18th at 2-4pm

Reiki promotes stress reduction and relaxation that promotes physical healing: people experience deep calm, reduction of pain and for some, spiritual wellness. It has been shown that stress is a significant contributor to illness. Many people report feeling a reduction of stress when practicing Reiki, especially over time.

A "Share Event" is a great way to get intro
duced to Reiki and also for people with Reiki experience to practice and connect with other Reiki practitioners. We begin with a brief introduction which includes a guided meditation.  The rest of the time is spent in the practice of Reiki, giving and receiving for those who are interested. Wear comfortable clothes. Reiki is given through gentle touch or simply holding the hands over the body.
God's Garden at Amy's Farms
March Mission Project - March 23rd 9-Noon

Amy's Farms is a privately owned farm in Ontario. Hope Partners is a ministry that provides supplemental food and housing services to people marginalized by poverty in the Inland Empire. Together, they partner to provide fresh vegetables and fruit to food banks operated by Hope Partners. Amy's Farms donates regularly to the food security program of Hope Partners.

Our congregation is a charter member of Hope Partners and supports their work. One additional way we can do that is to help out at the farm, Amy's Farm. Master Gardener, Tim Constantine, will lead us in a morning of tending the garden for the benefit of people who need food. There is room for 10 people to be part of this hands-on mission morning. Sign up by contacting Julie Roberts-Fronk on a Sunday or calling the church office.
Gentle Yoga
March 21 - 7-8 p.m.
This evening's gentle yoga is designed to help us connect with our spirit and even the sacred. Bonnie Schindler will be our teacher.

Bonnie's yoga journey began in 2005 when she was introduced to hatha yoga at a voice teacher's training program. After practicing regularly, she was stunned by how drastically yoga could influence one's mood, health and overall sense of well-being. She was inspired to deepen her learning and completed her 200 hour teaching certification in Curative Yoga in 2011. Bonnie believes that yoga can benefit everyone and that even a very short very gentle practice can clear the mind sooth the body and lift the spirit!

Bonnie lives with her wonderful husband and many beloved cats in Altadena and when she is not yogatating (her husband's term), she teaches voice from her home studio and performs in many southern California venues.

It may be practiced in a chair or on the floor. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it. There will be floor mats available for those who do not.
