Coding at WHMS

Would you like to bring coding to WHMS? Woodland Hill parent Annmarie Lanesey of AlbanyCanCode is hosting a meeting at WHMS on Friday, March 16 at 3:15 p.m. to talk about ways to incorporate coding into classrooms.

AlbanyCanCode is a non-profit organization that works to build a more inclusive and vibrant tech talent pipeline and tech sector workforce in the Capital Region.

Annmarie will give an overview of the work that ACC is doing in schools across the region, and will be determining the interest level in doing something similar at WHMS either with the help of ACC, or independently.

WHMS Happenings

Opera Saratoga performed The Ugly Ducking for WHMS students on Thursday, March 8 as part of their Opera-to-Go in-school productions. T he Ugly Duckling is a whimsical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale, which encourages young people to accept differences in other people. After the performance, they answered questions from the audience.

Upper El students recently visited the Baitun Nur Mosque (translates to House of Light) in Rotterdam to complete their study of the religion of Islam for their World Religions Project. Nahal, the young woman who toured the students around the mosque, explained that the facility is not only used as a place of prayer but for educational programming and social gatherings as well. There are even spaces to accommodate guests from out of town. Students also learned about the Islamic dress and Muslims around the world, and saw a demonstration of the various styles of wearing the "hijab" or headscarf. This variety reflects the great diversity of cultures that exist in Islam today.

After their tour, the group had a review of the basics and origins of the Islamic faith by Dr. Rehman, the President and Imam of Baitun Nur. He explained the practice of fasting during the month of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar, the significance of facing to the east when making prayers and demonstrated the different prayer postures. They were also able to hear the Imam make the "Call to Prayer" or Adhan in Arabic.

The students were attentive, curious, respectful and full of great questions. They all enjoyed their visit to the mosque and were quite eager to share what they had learned with their classmates. The group did a wonderful job presenting their research to the class as well as sharing their individual projects.

This basket of musical instruments helps to refine the Toddler's sense of hearing. As they manipulate the different types of instruments, they hear the different sounds they make. Students can explore rhythm, movement and tempo.

Flower arranging is a practical life activity helps the Toddlers develop fine motor skills. The children have to delicately move the flowers from one vase to another. This work also incorporates the cognitive ability to sort the flowers by color.

Drug and Alcohol Dangers

On Wednesday, March 21, First Sergeant Tracy Mance from the Albany County Sheriff's Office will speak to our Middle School students about drug and alcohol use and dangers.
