WATERCOLOR:
with Bill Lane
for Advanced & Intermediate Students Only
Taking your watercolor paintings to the next level.

During this class session, we’ll review planning your painting with a sketch and a value sketch; we’ll look at the principles of design, composition, the focal point, and the emotion you want to convey from your painting. We’ll explore different watercolor techniques and experiment with multi-color washes. Either paint from your own images or set up a still life but make sure you are passionate about your subject. It will show in your work!

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio

Class Fee: $70
Mondays, April 16 - June 4
1-4pm, no class 5/28
PORTRAITURE:
with Kate Huntington
Guest Instructor
Kate has been painting the portrait for 40+ years. In this class, which is open to beginners as well as those with portrait experience, Kate will share her approach to the portrait by giving a 1-hour demo on the first week, allowing the students to watch her put emphasis on strong drawing skills and correcting with the brush while building up color. This will be followed by the students working on their own piece while Kate uses her well trained eye to give one-on-one advice to each student, helping them improve their own portrait drawing and painting skills. The students are allowed to work in whatever medium they choose and Kate will help them to learn how to see. As a result, she'll take what they do and help make it better. To keep things interesting, there will be a new model every week (with the exception of the first 2 weeks we'll use the same model to allow time for the demo). Kate always has an interesting cast of characters on board.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio

Class Fee:
$70 + $28 model fee = $98
Materials: Kate works in oils but students are welcome to bring their medium of choice. Emphasis will be on drawing and form rather than magic formulas. It is suggested that students bring at least a warm and cool of each primary color, and some white.

PAINTING CHALLENGE: 40 Paintings in Eight Weeks:
with Kathrine Lovell
The focus of this class will be on creating a lot of small paintings on paper. No painting will be larger than 5 x 7 inches. Painting on paper has been a tradition with painters for a long time. It is a surface that allows artists to work out an idea without committing to a larger, more precious surface, it makes mistakes less daunting, and allows a particular freedom for all levels of painting skill. Each week we will create five paintings: three in the class and two at home. All the while learning about a variety of building block topics, such as color, composition, mood, balance, tension.

Location: Garden Level Print Studio

Class Fee: $80
Every painter who is trying to master his or her craft should make plenty of paintings.

This class will be a lighthearted, yet determined and thought provoking means to creating more of those paintings. Lessons will be taught in acrylics, however, students are encouraged to use gouache or watercolor if they prefer.
Wednesdays, April 18 - June 6
3-6pm
EXPERIMENTS IN COLOR:
with Paula Martiesian
Guest Instructor
About Paula: "After I graduated from RISD, I had the privilege of studying with painter and former RISD professor Gordon Peers. More than a teacher, he was mentor and guide into the world of painting. We spent hours discussing specific paintings and painting in general. He never taught me technique, he taught something greater - the ability to absorb a painting, dissect it and put it back together, all without losing the essential spirit of the painting. It was, quite simply, the most important painting experience I ever had. I have sought to repeat that experience in my life, passing on that information and love of painting he had to others."

For me, the use of color is both intuitive and the product of many years of experimentation. For others, its use can be daunting. In this class we will find ways to create both a body of knowledge about color and a comfort level with its use.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio

Class Fee: $80
Color can be mercurial, slipping in and out of reach depending on how it is used. Put down a color with a palette knife and it will be unlike the same color applied with a brush. Use a rag and the experience is again totally different – all with the same exact color.

Through a series of class-long exercises, we will seek to amplify painters’ sensitivity to warm/cool color shifts, the idea of color intensity and how texture effects color perception. We will explore color context and the concepts of total color and local color. We will see how certain colors recede and come forward depending on how they are used and we will experiment with how different light sources effect perception of color.

The last few classes will be devoted to a single painting utilizing what we have learned. We will work from a setup in class.
Wednesdays, April 18 - June 6
4:30-6:30pm
ART HISTORY AND APPRECIATION:

Questions and comments are welcome!

PORTRAITS IN PASTEL:
with Raymond Finelli
Doing a portrait of a sitting model is a challenge that is unlike any other form of art because the total effort is focused on making the portrait become the image of a sitting model. In Raymond Finelli's Portrait Class you will receive individual attention and enjoy the ambiance of fellow students. You'll find yourself thinking about things you hadn't thought about before: Sketches and Sketching; Eyes, nose, mouth - making them fit; Modeling; Lighting and Shadows.
Whether your medium is charcoal, pastel, oil, acrylic, or watercolor, whether you're a beginner or experienced, you'll see a big change in what you can do after only a few lessons. You'll come away each day with a sense of excitement.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Class Fee:
$80 + $32 model fee = $112
For those artists working in charcoal or pastel, bring 19 x 25 inch pastel paper. Paper size is important to allow for changes and to give the image "breathing space," and we always encourage drawing in life size. We start at 9:00 o'clock sharp and break at 10:00 for about 15 minutes for coffee and relaxation. When we resume we work for 20 minute periods with 5 minute breaks until noon.

Materials:  For members working in pastel or charcoal: bring pastels, charcoal and paper. Recommended: 19 1/2" x 25 1/2" Canson Mi-Teintes acid-free paper, Sky Blue. For members working in oil or acrylic: bring paints, Gamsol mineral spirits, canvas, covered board or composition paper for oil painting.
