Keeping Schools Safe
In the wake of the recent school shootings in Florida, four schools in Beaufort County had been placed on modified lock-downs while administrators and law enforcement investigated possible safety threats. While no actual threats were substantiated, concerns about safety have been expressed by students, parents and staff. Superintendent Jeff Moss, School Improvement Council members, educators and law enforcement met March 7 for an extensive discussion about what the district is currently doing to keep schools safe, and what improvements might be made. A video is available on the district website.
Here Comes the Sun!
The district's new "solar farm" at the main office in Beaufort is ready to go. The district currently pays South Carolina Electric and Gas 13 cents per kilowatt-hour, but with the solar farm up and running, the district can sell power back to the utility at a rate of 22 cents per kilowatt-hour.  That's a profit of 9 cents per kilowatt-hour.
April 21  Bond Referendum
The Beaufort County Board of Education has voted to hold a county-wide bond referendum on April 21 aimed at adding classroom space to address student enrollment growth in the southern part of the county and also student interest in Career and Technology Education (CATE) courses. Comprehensive information is available on the district  website's Bond Referendum page.
Living Libraries
More than 30 community members became "human books" when they shared their unique stories with students from Hilton Head Island High.
Cutting-Edge Careers
District high schools are offering a variety of exciting Career and Technology Education (CATE) courses that are designed to prepare students for high-paying jobs and industry certifications in rapidly emerging fields. New, high-tech facilities are in use at Battery Creek and May River high schools, and student interest in CATE courses is at an all-time high.
