St. Michael's Academy
  :

It was a short week at St. Michael's Academy but an important one.

Thank you to all of our students who participated in the Spelling Bee last evening.  St. Michael's Academy was represented by a strong contingent of spellers who performed with poise and maturity. Thank you to our teachers, Mrs. Nicoliello and Ms. Lefebvre, who spent many hours working with the students prior to the Bee. And parents, you should be very proud of your children.

Today we held our second round of parent/teacher conferences. This second round offers our teachers, parents and students an opportunity to delve deeper into the student's academic and character development. Thank you for making time in your busy schedules to attend.

We will begin our IOWA Tests of Basic Skills next week for grades 3 through 7.  Please see the preparation tips farther down in this newsletter and use the four day weekend to rest in preparation for the testing on Monday.

Enjoy a nice weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

From The Classroom of Ms. Velez - Spanish

    Hola From Spanish

This year in the Spanish class at SMA, PreK and Kindergarten students have been having fun as they work with vowel sounds, color words and counting 1-20. Our first, second and third grade students are
having fun reading picture story books and vocabulary development activities. The 4th & 5th grade students are participating in short dialogues using parts of speech such as adjectives and nouns. These will help students to greet people, compare likes/dislikes and ask about how they are feeling.

Middle school students are researching and sharing important facts about Spanish speaking  countries. They are also working with verb conjugations as they participate in short dialogue
conversations.

With each year, the students have the opportunity to develop better pronunciation, reading and  conversational skills in Spanish as we face different challenges and succeed together. Our  gratitude and appreciation goes to God and to you, our parents, who are an important part of
each student's success. May the Lord bless now and always!

Hasta siempre...

 Spelling Bee

St. Michael's Academy Shines

Congratulations to the St. Michael's Academy students who did a fantastic job at the annual regional Spelling Bee.

Grace, Petra, and Christina, were among the top SMA spellers making the top 20 out of 90+ contestants.  Many made it through multiple rounds and provided a great display of SMA talent!   It was also nice to see multiple sister and brother combinations from SMA.  (Christina and John, Petra and Shane, and Sarah and Jacob.)

Congrats Petra on making the top 11 and hats off to Grace who made the top 6.    We are all very proud of you!

Test Prep

Getting Off On The Right Foot

Next week, we will start our Iowa testing for grades 3-7.  Here are a few guidelines to help your child get off on the right foot:

- Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies suggest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and concentration.

- Help your children by encouraging a good night's rest before exams. Children who are tired will have difficulty focusing on their work.

- Make the morning of test days pleasant. Stress will impair your children's ability to perform their best.

- Remind your children to dress comfortably, perhaps in layers, so that they are able to adjust to the temperature in the room.

- Ensure that your children make it to school on-time so that they do not miss any instructions and are allowed ample time to settle in and relax before the test begins.

- Don't be too anxious about your children's test scores. Although it is important to let them know that the tests should be taken seriously, it is also important not to increase test-taking anxiety.

- Don't underestimate your influence on your children. Taking an interest in what they are doing at school and helping them prepare for tests will certainly have a positive impact on them!

 Lost and Found

Lost and Found Bin Overflowing!

If your child has come home not wearing the same thing he left the house in, please check the lost and found bin located outside the cafeteria entrance.  It is overflowing with items including SMA sweatshirts, lunch boxes, new snow boots, hats, gloves, mittens, scarfs...you name it.  Please check the box is your child is missing anything.  Unclaimed items will be donated.

  Food  For Thought

"...His goodness knows how to proportion itself to the smallest of His creatures as to the greatest of them. Be not afraid then in your solitary conversations, to tell Him of your miseries, fears, worries, of those who are dear to you, of your projects, and of your hopes. Do so with confidence and with an open heart."
