Special Needs Unit Leads to Special Field Trip
Students in Roxbury High School's Teaching Young Children's (TYC) class took a special field trip on January 18th to the Regional Day School in Morristown to learn about working with and understanding children will special needs.
This annual field trip to the Regional Day School allows students to work with a special needs population that have more severe disabilities and come from a range of sending districts. RHS students played volleyball, helped teach numbers, painted pyramids and did a variety of classroom activities in each class during their visit.
Pam Mandracchia, the TYC's teacher explained, "As we study a Special Needs Unit, this allows students to be exposed to different therapies that are not available in regular education settings. Different teaching techniques and strategies that match the population are compared to regular education classes. My hope is that students come away with a stronger understanding of yet another aspect of special education." Click here to read more about this trip and program offering.

Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey will host G.I.R.L. Conference 2018, a day filled with exploration designed to help Girl Scouts in grades 8-12, and their accompanying adults, broaden their interests in careers, STEM, life skills, advocacy, and high school/college readiness.
An exciting day of interactive workshops and hands-on activities, G.I.R.L. Conference 2018 will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centenary University (400 Jefferson Street, Hackettstown, NJ), for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors, and affiliated adults. Girls who are not yet members of Girl Scouts, but who would like to attend, should join Girl Scouts prior to registering.
Participants will work to identify the go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, and leader inside them. Girls will be able to choose from age-specific sessions, as well as hear from two extraordinary keynote speakers who will inspire attendees to unleash their inner G.I.R.L. Adults will have an opportunity to take separate workshops in teen development, college planning, and Girl Scout traditions.

Lake Hopatcong Group Shows Boatload of Thanks for New Law
The non-profit organization hosted the event at the Windlass Restaurant in Jefferson.
About 160 local business owners, residents, foundation members and local/state government officials gathered to thank the legislative delegation that promoted the "Lake Hopatcong Fund" bill. Boating and fishing on the lake have been threatened in recent years by persistent weed growth, preventing dock and boat use. Low water levels from sedimentation and droughts have disrupted recent boating seasons. Click here to read more about this legislation and celebration from Tap Into Roxbury.
With Big Games Coming to Roxbury, USA Fistball Offers Coach Lessons
Being that Roxbury is going to be the
host town for the 2018 U18 World Fistball Championships this summer, the organizers are hoping more young people give the obscure sport a try.
Toward that end, the United States Fistball Association is offering seminars to local coaches, athletic directors and educators.
The seminars will take place July 13 and July 14 during the big tournament.
The championship games are scheduled to happen July 11 through July 15 at Horseshoe Lake park in Succasunna. U18 men's and women's national fistball teams from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Chile, Italy, New Zealand and India will compete in the international tournament.
The seminars will begin, on July 13, with a 9 a.m. to noon session on "basic practical training measures." At 2 p.m. participants will go to the fields to watch the games being played, said the USFA. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Library Blood Drive Will Help 111 People
On January 17th, the Roxbury Public Library held its first American Red Cross blood drive. Despite snow and less than ideal driving conditions, dozens of area residents showed up to donate blood, nearly doubling the Red Cross' quota for the day!
The drive was held in honor of local resident,
Matt Adonis. Having a blood rive in his honor was a lovely way to bring awareness to the constant need for blood in our communities. Whether you know Matt or nor, it was a way for neighbors and friends to show their support by "paying it forward" for other in need. Another drive has been scheduled for June 29th.
