WE50: Top 50 Women in Engineering: Returners and Transferrers to engineering
On 23 June 2018,
International Women in Engineering Day celebrates the achievements of women across all engineering sectors. Once again this year WES is working in partnership with The Telegraph and we are seeking your nominations for the
Top 50 Women in Engineering. For 2018, we are focussing on celebrating
Returners and Transferrers now working in Engineering or allied sectors whose achievements and talents are outstanding.
We need your help in finding the top 50 Women in Engineering: Returners and Transferrers to engineering! Applications opened on 8 March and will close on 30 April. Details about the criteria and how to apply (including self-nominations) can all be found
here.

WES Celebrates International Women's Day
The YMB #PressforProgress
8 March this year marked International Women's Day and the Young Members' Board decided to join the IWD #PressforProgress campaign and make their pledges. These included:
- I will challenge stereotypes and bias
- We will celebrate women's achievements
- I will forge positive visibility of women
- I will influence the beliefs and actions of others
The response on social media has been fantastic and the Young Members Board are very pleased to have been involved in such a great initiative.
The WES London Cluster celebrated the day by sharing the #PressforProgress slides on social media with messages of support and a call to celebrate women's achievements. Nausheen Basha, research assistant at City University, University of London, prepared an article '
Press for positive progress within STEM'.

WES Young Members' Board
The STEM Challenge Videos Continue!
The YMB have been carrying out STEM Challenges based on the challenge cards developed by the James Dyson Foundation. This month's activities have included
making an underwater volcano, a Cartesian Diver, and the crowd favourite, a spaghetti bridge!

WES London Cluster
WOW Festival
WES London Cluster took part in the Women of the World Festival WOW in March. Thank you to members Yasmin Ali, Adriana Vargas-Colwill, Virginia Ruiz, Margherita Latronico, Helen Fletcher and Victoria Smith-Barbour who promoted WES and engineering to the attendees who included parents, teachers, curious minds and children. Demonstrations of engineering at the WES stand included creating bridges with spaghetti and using virtual reality glasses.
The team found it an incredible event to increase awareness of issues faced by women, meet people from diverse backgrounds who are supporting women's causes, meet environmental advocates, discover how taboos are being broken, etc. We hope to be back next year!

| INWED Draw an Engineer Competition 2018
Are you a primary school teacher or a parent/guardian to children aged 5 to 11? Why not get them involved in our Draw An Engineer Competition to celebrate #INWED18. The winners will receive a prize, and will be featured on the INWED website.
To enter, simply draw, crayon or paint an engineer on A4 paper and send a high resolution scan of your submission with the subject line INWED COMPETITION ENTRY to

Please include your name, age, Key Stage 1 or 2 & School (if applicable). The closing date for this year's entries is Monday 25 June 2018

The WES affiliated Loughborough University student group hosted an event along with the IMechE: '
How do you solve a problem like the lack of women in engineering?'
Both talks from Jennifer Glover and guest speaker Will Whittow (winner of WES's 2017 Men As Allies Award) were full of interesting facts and thought provoking points. This then led nicely into an open discussion during which it was a pleasure to hear from men and women at all stages of their engineering careers. A great evening all round and a special thank you to those who attended.

1st Annual WES Regional Cluster Conference - Midlands Region
You are invited to join us in Malvern for the Women's Engineering Society's 1st Regional Cluster Conference, kindly hosted by QinetiQ. The purpose of the conference is to meet and form a local member network, invigorating and kick-starting the Cluster. It promises to be a really interesting evening with a great variety of speakers as well as ample networking time.
We will be hearing from MFG Solicitors on key aspects of employment law related to D&I, Qinetiq, and the Chief Executive of WES.

Beatrice Shilling wins staff and student vote at Royal Holloway University of London
|
The new science building, due to open in September 2018, will be named 'The Beatrice Shilling Building' in honour of Beatrice 'Tilly' Shilling, a former WES member.
Shilling, born in 1909, was a celebrated aeronautical engineer and successful motorcycle racer. She was best known for her work on carburettors at the Royal Aircraft Establishment during the Second World War.
