Message from the Assistant Director, Alumni Development

"April showers bring May flowers." - Proverb

Spring is in the air and our campus is a beehive of activity. In the Foundation we are busily preparing for the 36th Annual Vikings Athletics Associates Golf Tournament, honoring longtime LBCC football coach, Wil Shaw. If you haven't already registered there is still time to join us in a day of fun and fundraising for our Viking student-athletes.   Attending the golf tournament also ensures that you will meet our new Interim Athletics Director, Bill Husak. Bill comes to us from Loyola Marymount University, where he served as Athletic Director for 20 years. We are so excited to have him join us during this time of growth and expansion in the athletics department.

Among the many exciting events our associate groups are hosting this month is the Outstanding Seniors Luncheon. This is our premier fundraising event for our Lifetime Learning Center and features honorees Joseph Prevratil, Harry Saltzgaver and Shirley Wild for a lifetime of service.   Our African American Scholars Fund has also been busy planning an enlightening panel discussion featuring noted feminist and equal rights advocate Dorothy Pitman Hughes. Join us on May 2nd for one or all three panels!

The LAWineFest makes its Long Beach debut in June. This event is proud to be in its 14th successful year. This popular event blazed a trail in L.A. for the past 13 years. Now it's bringing its mission to bring wine and people together in an inviting and accessible way to Long Beach. One hundred percent of ticket proceeds will go to benefit the LBCC Foundation! Come out to support the Foundation at an event that balances fun, exploration and education about food and wine.

Go Vikings!

Letter from Bill Husak
Interim Athletics Director
Dear Vikings Alumni,

A definition of great is being consistently good for a long period of time.  Long Beach City College Athletics program has been great for approaching 100 years.  It was Bert C. Smith, Okla Smith, and Clifford Wright who were credited with starting the first varsity athletic program at Long Beach Junior College in 1927. To date, Long Beach City College has won:
  • 16 National Titles
  • 7 Runner-Up National Titles
  • With Men's Volleyball's 3-0 win over Irvine Valley College on Saturday, April 27th, 93 State Titles - the most of any Community College in the state
  • 50 State Runner-Up Titles
Indeed, the outstanding Athletics program has represented an institution that is also noted for its greatness in serving the educational needs of the southern California region and attracting students from within the state, across the country and around the world.

I am honored and excited to serve as the Athletics Director in this time of even greater growth and success.  Our teams and student-athletes continue to win championships and graduate at a high rate.  Our coaches are committed to developing Vikings for a lifetime of achievement and success.  This coming year will see construction begin on a new aquatics center, five sand volleyball courts, six tennis courts, two artificial turf soccer fields (one of which will also be lined for lacrosse) and a new softball field.

As we conclude our 2018-2019 Athletics year, we thank you for your support of our student-athletes and programs and invite you to attend a game, match, or meet. LBCC Alumni Association members gain discounted tickets to all of our home games and we'd love to see you in the stands rooting for the current generation of Vikings. LBCC and the Vikings teams need the continued support of people like you and the communities it serves. Thank you for that support and as always...

Go Vikings!
