In the Future, a Distillery on Every Corner
By Justin Fox, Bloomberg
Americans are finding job fulfillment in the craft-booze industry, which continues its upward growth trajectory unabated. One of the fun things I discovered looking through the jobs data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics last week was that, during a generally impressive stretch for manufacturing employment growth, "breweries, wineries and distilleries" was among the industries leading the way.
...This wasn't a one-year fluke, either. Over the past seven years, the breweries, wineries and distilleries sector has been adding jobs at an 11.1 percent annual rate, compared with 1.7 percent for nonfarm payroll employment as whole. The contrast with the other half of the beverage manufacturing industry, soft drinks, is quite something:

ATF and TTB: is another divorce on the horizon? What's going on with the agency?
by Robert M. Tobiassen, Compliance Consultant and former Chief Counsel, TTB Forward by John Hinman, Hinman & Carmichael, LLP
Forward by John Hinman: We asked Rob why TTB was structured the way it was, what we can expect to happen as the 2019 budget is implemented and what kind of TTB enforcement policies will be in place going forward. He responded with the history and status of the agency, and his prognosis for the future, based on his long experience in Washington DC. This article is must reading for every professional in the alcoholic beverage industry who interfaces with the TTB.
INTRODUCTION Disruption is the descriptive word du jour used by every industry experiencing change and challenges in its global supply chain, manufacturing models, distribution channels, and attracting and retaining consumers. The Trump Administration is similarly disrupting Executive Branch agencies through its political appointees, program change mandates, and budget reallocations. TTB is not exempt from this disruption and the fiscal year 2019 proposed budget foreshadows...

Jim Beam: a brand history
by Tom Bruce-Gardyne, The Spirits Business
America's powerhouse Bourbon brand has been around for a long time and, as The Spirits Business discovers, it shows little sign of slowing down.
Older than Johnnie Walker and with the founding family still involved, Jim Beam certainly has pedigree. Megan Frank, VP of global marketing, pays credit to the brand's 220-year history, which stretches from founder Jacob Beam to current master distiller and direct descendent Fred Noe III. "Those family roots and that legacy, and the fact the family is still very much involved, are key differentiators," she says. "It's one of the reasons we're the world number one Bourbon today, and produce more than 50% of all the Bourbon in the world." Jack Daniel's, lest you forget, is a Tennessee whiskey.

'We're hoping his memory never fades away:'
Central Pa. distillery honors son who OD'd
by Dylan Segelbaum, York Daily Record

Patrons read the cocktail menu at Dead Lightning Still Works in New Cumberland, while owner Andrea Montgomery and bartender Lydia Stinson offer suggestions. |
Inside Dead Lightning Still Works in New Cumberland, the walls are adorned with Grateful Dead artwork and welcoming messages including "Stay Positive" and "Relax." "Cross Road Blues" by Robert Johnson, the mysterious blues musician who, according to legend, sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his guitar-playing abilities, played over the speakers. And a cutout of Skyler Montgomery - accurate to his size, 6 feet 7 inches - greets customers who walk in the door. Montgomery, a welder who loved bluegrass, jam bands and the Grateful Dead, died after overdosing in York County in 2016. He was 21.
Family members opened Dead Lightning Still Works to honor his memory on what would've been his 23rd birthday... Read more.

The War on Straws Is Coming to a Bar Near You
by Cara Lombardo, The Wall Street Journal
|
Diego, which has stopped using plastic straws, served cocktails with paper straws at an event this month in New York City. |
Plastic straws have begun disappearing from some taverns and restaurants as bartenders, liquor companies and others argue that too many end up in the ocean.
Jennifer Call was aghast recently when the server at her go-to Asheville, N.C., pizza spot delivered her Diet Coke.
