WEEK 5 SOCCER RANKINGS; "MELTING POT" MAKES GEORGIA SOCCER A POWER
 
Today, we roll out our Week 5 soccer rankings for boys and girls. Also, Score Atlanta's Graham David takes a look at how the diversity of the boys soccer programs in Atlanta and across the state makes the Peach State a power in the sport.

Cent. Gwinnett overtakes Walton as 7A No. 1

Central Gwinnett grabs the No. 1 ranking in the state's highest classification this week following previous No. 1 Walton's loss to Collins Hill (3-2) on March 16. Walton settles at No. 3 this week, making room for Norcross to move to
Central Gwinnett takes over as 7A No. 1.
No. 2. Lambert, previously sixth, replaces Parkview at fourth. Hillgrove, previously unranked, debuts at fifth following victories over Lambert, North Paulding and McEachern.

Following Cambridge's loss to Alpharetta on March 16, it fell from first to fifth, making room for Gainesville to take the top spot in Class AAAAAA. Chattahoochee, previously third, is second this week. Allatoona debuts at No. 3 and Dalton, previously sixth, is fourth.

Yet again, McIntosh regains the No. 1 ranking in Class AAAAA after current No. 2 Clarkston held it for a week. Clarkston is coming off a 4-2 loss to Vestavia Hills (Ala.) on March 17. McIntosh, following a loss to Clarkston on March 9, defeated Whitewater 2-1 on March 15 to regain traction. Former No. 3 Carrollton and former No. 4 Rome settle to sixth and ninth, respectively, this week.

No. 1 Chestatee, No. 2 Blessed Trinity and No. 3 Marist hold their rankings from last week again this week. Below them, shifting teams are finding or losing form. Former No. 4 Columbus dropped to No. 7, making room for Upson-Lee to move up to fourth. Northwest Whitfield, previously sixth, rounds out the top five.

If Westminster got tired of being in control of Class AAA soccer, you wouldn't know it. The Wildcats hold the top spot again this week over No. 2 East Hall and No. 3 North Murray. Previous No. 4 Savannah Arts slid outside the top five this week making room for Windsor Forest to take its place. GAC is fifth again.

Putnam County debuts at No. 1 this week following former No. 1 Jefferson's loss to Westside-Augusta on March 13. Jefferson is fourth this week. Benedictine holds at No. 2 again followed by previous No. 4 Thomasville, which moved up a spot this week. Previous No. 5 Coosa fell to unranked following a loss to No. 7 Armuchee, allowing Lamar County into the top five at fifth.

In Class A, Paideia is still on top. Whitefield Academy (No. 2), Atlanta International (No. 3) and Pinecrest Academy (No. 4) remain the same. Former No. 5 Georgia Military fell to sixth with Athens Academy replacing GMC at fifth. Former No. 6 Savannah Country Day climbed one spot to sixth. Brookstone, previously unranked, enters the mix at No. 8 following St. Anne Pacelli's fall to 10th.

Milton is new No. 1 in highest classification

Following its 2-0 defeat of then No. 1 Lassiter on March 13, Milton debuts at the top of the state's highest classification this week. Lassiter settles at second. Mill Creek moved from No. 7 to No. 5 following Walton's slide to

seventh.
In Class AAAAAA, Johns Creek is in the lead again this week. But following a loss to No. 10 Creekview on March 13, former No. 2 Harrison fell to fourth. Creekview climbed to second following the thrilling 2-1 upset.
It's business as usual in Class AAAAA as McIntosh leads the way. In fact, the top five stays the same following last week's rankings. Flowery Branch, Veterans, Decatur and Starr's Mill round out the top half of the rankings.
In Class AAAA, Marist, Blessed Trinity, St. Pius and Spalding remain the top four teams with a new No. 5, Northside-Columbus, putting itself in the mix. Northside defeated then-No. 5 Columbus on March 13 (5-0) to debut this week at fifth while Columbus fell to No. 8.
Westminster has the top spot this week again in Class AAA and Lovett (No. 2) and GAC (No. 3) are still chasing. A new No. 4, Savannah Arts, improved by one spot this week as Lumpkin County fell to fifth.
St. Vincent's has a new No. 2 to fend off as East Laurens moves up one spot following Lamar County's slide to third. Model holds the No. 4 spot this week with a new No. 5, Vidalia, entering the fray. Screven County, formerly fifth, moved down to sixth.
Holy Innocents' and Athens Academy have control of Class A with a new No. 3, First Presbyterian Day, positioning itself for the playoffs. Former No. 3, Mt. Pisgah, fell to fourth. Savannah Country Day rounds out the top five.

Diversity drives boys soccer success in GA

Boys soccer in Georgia continues to break new ground and raise its profile nationally. Since 2013, the the Peach State has landed numerous teams in MaxPreps' year-end spring soccer Top 25 computer ratings; Georgia landed five teams in the 2013 rankings with Dalton High School claiming the No. 1 spot and winning the Class AAAA state championship 5-0 over Southeast Whitfield. 
Since the 2014 season, 19 different Georgia High Schools have made appearances in the rating, with the 2015 and 2016 seasons yielding the highest amount of top-25 teams with eight each.
