2018 Leadership Luncheon - Tickets On Sale Now

A Message from the Executive Director

March is a big month - and in like a lion she roared, but the lamb is nowhere in sight! There are some good things very much in sight though, right around the corner.

I hope you will join us for our 2018 Leadership Luncheon on April 26, at the Holiday Inn by the Bay.  Tickets are on sale now . It's going to be a great day - we are excited to recognize and celebrate outstanding female leaders in our communities.

This year, we celebrate women and organizations that are very different, yet have one important thing in common: they epitomize  true grit. The time  is  now, and with women like these leading the way, we will change the future of Maine and the country.

Join us to celebrate these women:

All of our 21 grantees will be present to talk about their programs, and to the extent possible, a grantee will be at each table so that you will learn more deeply about their work.

You'll also hear about what's new this year and for the future - our role as a funder and social change leader is still top of the list, and we're granting to and partnering with more organizations than ever. We are ramping up our presence in the community, having smaller events throughout the state; we are convening experts on the issues that are facing us; we are pushing our brand and our voice into traditional and social media. We want you to be a part of this, to be a part of the organization we are becoming because you have asked for more. It is time, we are more. I can't wait to talk more  at the Luncheon.

Buy your table, Leadership Circle tickets, or single ticket today. If you are able, add a little more to help support the grantees' complimentary meals.

 All the Rage
#Metoo has us thinking about gender and gender diversity in the workplace.

This year we added a question to our Letter of Interest. We asked applicants to tell us about their board and staff diversity including, but not limited to, gender diversity.

In the non-profit community generally, women are very visible leaders, well-represented, even at the highest organizational leadership staff and board levels, especially when compared to the private sector. However, within the non-profit community, there are still many organizations actively working to improve their gender diversity.

Anita Ruff,
Executive Director

Shannon Banks, President of the Board

Oasis Free Clinics, a healthcare provider for uninsured residents in greater Brunswick and one of our current grantees, has been one of those organizations that has been slowly changing the gender diversity of its board and staff. We talked with Anita Ruff, Executive Director, and Shannon Banks, Board President, at Oasis Free Clinics to learn a little bit more about their experience as an organization that was founded by three physicians, all of them men (with one of those founders still very involved in the organization and currently serving his last term on the board). Since its inception, Oasis has had many part-time staff positions that were filled by women who worked as receptionists and office managers, as well as volunteer nurses, social workers and dental assistants. They were extremely well respected by the board, as well as by the large group of mostly male volunteer medical and dental providers. They very successfully implemented the decisions made mostly by men. Today, they play a role in the decision making, too.

Shannon Banks serves as Oasis Free Clinics' Board President, and she is also the only woman on a thirteen member Board.  Among the women staff currently working at Oasis, Anita is the first full-time Executive Director, the part-time Clinical Director is a woman, Oasis part-time dental assistant, part-time mental health coordinator, and all the office's support staff are women. Oasis has also recently added several more women providers to its volunteer pool of medical providers and dentists, and they would be thrilled by your inquiry if you are interested in their amazing work providing comprehensive medical and dental services to the low income, uninsured adults in the southern Midcoast area. Call 721-9277 or visit the volunteer page of their  website for more information on volunteer opportunities.

In talking about Oasis Free Clinics' efforts to create more gender diversity and the Fund's efforts to create more geographic, class, racial and ethnic diversity on our own board and staff, we agreed one thing was vital: the need to be intentional, to literally create and then hold a place for your vision, until it comes into being, otherwise, it can be hard to overcome the natural momentum of what you've always done and how you've always done it.

In a Flash: What is Driving Our Work
It's TAX time again!

The Maine Women's Fund is very proud to support the vital work of Four Directions Development Corporation (FDDC). FDDC  improves the social and economic conditions of the four Wabanaki tribes in Maine - the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot - through education and investment in affordable housing, tribal business ventures, and Native entrepreneurship.

The satisfied tax filer in this picture, who is currently saving to buy a car, received assistance with filing her taxes at a recent free tax clinic offered by FDDC.

They accomplish their mission by making home loans both on and off reservation, as well as by providing high quality financial capabilities training, home ownership counseling, credit and budgeting counseling, and free tax preparation in all of the tribal communities, in partnership with the IRS and the CA$H Coalition of Maine (which provides tax help all over Maine in case you know someone who might benefit). Tax clinics provide FDDC with an opportunity to inform tax filers about their options for savings and asset building in all areas of their lives.

On behalf of the staff and board of the Maine Women's Fund, thank you for
