American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation News
MARCH 2018
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE presidentmessage
Dear Colleagues:

Dr. Kevin HausslerCongratulations are in order! We now have full recognition as the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation through the overseeing body of the Veterinary Specialty Organizations Committee (formally known as American Board of Veterinary Specialties, ABVS).

This has been a long and sometimes fraught process; thank you to the early efforts of Dr. C. Wayne McIlwraith as the college's first ABVS representative for helping to get us started on the right track and the final shepherding of the process and document submission over the last 5 years by Dr. Andris Kaneps to successful completion. Their time and effort on behalf of the college is greatly appreciated.

A second congratulation goes out to the sixteen new ACVSMR diplomates who successfully passed their board-certification examinations in January. Their hard work and dedication is recognized. If you have a chance, please reach out and welcome them to the college.

As a young college, we are still trying to define and clarify our professional standing and the services that we provide as diplomates of a AVMA-approved college that specialize in sports medicine and rehabilitation. In parallel to our development as a college, there has been a growth in canine and equine rehabilitation certification programs, which many of our diplomates have participated in and have obtained certification from.

The college asks for your help in an ongoing effort to reduce confusion and provide distinction between a person that has obtained a certification versus the additional efforts and examination process required to become board-certified. Our goal is to highlight and promote the value of ACVSMR diplomates. Please remember that only diplomates can use the terms specialize, specialty, or specialist. Those that have completed rehabilitation certification program can use the term certified.

In addition, the college requests that its members spell out the name of the college whenever possible to again help reduce confusion and to clearly identify and promote the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. From a client or professional colleague perspective, DACVSMR is a jumble of letters that must mean something to someone, but does not clearly define what is meant or what that person may specialize in. As with all uncommon abbreviations, it is customary to spell out the entire word and to add the abbreviation after, if needed.

As a reminder, please use the following format in all correspondence to provide clarity and reduce confusion:
J. Johnson, DVM
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation
Certified in canine rehabilitation (CCRT or CCRP)
Certified in veterinary acupuncture (IVAS)

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know or contact one of ACVSMR board or committee members.

Regards,
Kevin Haussler_s signature

ACVSMR Achieves Full Recognitionrecognition

The ACVSMR reached a significant milestone at the annual American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) meeting held March 2-3 in Schaumburg, Illinois. The ABVS is the committee of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) that sets standards for, advises and recognizes veterinary specialties. After review of our request for full recognition and the annual and five-year reports submitted in November 2017, the ABVS voted to recommend that the AVMA recognize ACVSMR as a fully recognized veterinary specialty. That final step will be made by the AVMA Executive Board in April.

When the ACVSMR reached provisional recognition in 2010, our specialty had the full rights and responsibilities of a veterinary specialty and we proceeded to develop and grow our College. During the past eight years, the College has provided annual reports to the ABVS listing the demographics, new developments, challenges and other details of our College, and has responded to requests for modifications made by the ABVS, ultimately resulting in full recognition.

Now that ACVSMR is fully recognized as a veterinary specialty, our most important work continues - providing specialist care in sports medicine and rehabilitation to our clients as well as integrating treatment with other specialists and primary care veterinarians. We continue to advance our residency training programs, research efforts and continuing education opportunities. With our outstanding Diplomates, and with ACVSMR achieving full recognition, our future is securely established.

Our thanks to Dr. Andris J. Kaneps, who has worked closely with the ABVS to help us achieve this milestone.

Call for Nominations for ACVSMR Treasurertreasurer

Dear ACVSMR Members,

We are excited to announce an opportunity to join the ACVSMR Board and help us elevate our profession! It is our pleasure to invite all eligible ACVSMR members to consider being nominated as a candidate for election to the position of ACVSMR Treasurer.

The ACVSMR Officers are excited to make this opportunity available to ACVSMR members. We welcome and encourage motivated members who have not previously participated in ACVSMR governance to submit their nomination.

The current ACVSMR Treasurer is stepping down a few months before his term is scheduled to conclude in October 2018, to fulfill another appointment.  The Treasurer is elected to serve a four (4) year term. There is a limit of two (2) consecutive or subsequent terms that an individual may serve as Treasurer. In this case, the incoming Treasurer will initially serve concurrently with the outgoing Treasurer to ensure a smooth transition, after which the new Treasurer will complete the current Treasurer's term and then begin a full four (4) year term of their own, with eligibility for reelection.

The general duties of the Treasurer are as follows: The  Treasurer will be the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the corporation. The Treasurer will perform all duties commonly incident to, and vested in, the offices of treasurer of a corporation, as well as all duties delegated and designated by the Board of Directors or the President, including, but not limited to the administration of the fiscal and financial policies of the corporation. In addition, the Treasurer is expected to attend bimonthly (every other month) Board of Directors conference calls and to attend the annual Board of Directors meeting. Other specific duties are outlined in ACVSMR governance documents and are available upon request.

Eligibility Criteria
To be a candidate, an ACVSMR diplomate must be nominated by two (2) other active diplomates in good standing via a letter of support submitted to   info@vsmr.org .  In addition, the candidate needs to submit a letter of intent to serve and a brief CV.
If you have any questions regarding this opportunity, please email the nomination committee chair, Dr. Julia Tomlinson ( drjulia@tcrehab.com ). We are happy to discuss the position and the application process with all interested potential nominees.

Help Build a Resource Library for Veterinary Students! library

The public relations committee of ACVSMR is hoping to develop sports medicine and rehabilitation student clubs in veterinary schools. We are conducting a survey of all U.S. veterinary schools and are planning to establish contact with advisors of existing clubs. In addition, we will be reaching out to faculty at the remaining schools offering assistance in developing student clubs.

For our organization to be most beneficial to these student clubs, we are now requesting that ACVSMR diplomates help us to create a library of resource materials. These can include case reports (canine and equine), webinars, and videotapes of clinical conditions with diagnosis, etc. We will make these resources available to student club advisors for use in club meetings, crediting those who have supplied the resources.

We expect interest to be high and are hoping that you will support us in this effort by helping to build our library. Please contact Dr. Linda Blythe, linda.blythe@oregonstate.edu. Thank you!
