As part of Dan Piatkowski's Campus Sustainability Seminar this week, he brought in four special guest speakers. On Monday, Kirk Conger, mechanical engineer and energy projects manager from UNL Energy and Maintenance spoke to the class about sustainable energy systems here at UNL. On Wednesday several employees from UNL’s Custodial Services and Integrated Pest Management lectured about how they are working to improve sustainability objectives on campus. Our guests included Zainudeen Popoola, director of Custodial Services, Estelle DeJonge, assistant director of Custodial Services, and Ronald Bacon, pest control manager of Integrated Pest Management.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Mark Hoistad, interim director of the Landscape Architecture program. Several years ago, I served as the founding director of the Landscape Architecture program and have been associated with the program ever since. I am honored to have been asked to once again take over the leadership of the program. I was very proud to have recruited the initial classes of students, developed its curriculum and led the program through its candidacy qualification for accreditation, with the help of Steve Rodie and Richard Sutton. It has been interesting to see the program grow and evolve. The addition of Landscape Architecture to the college was in important moment in the college’s history. It added another voice to our design community, expanding the issues discussed and the capabilities of our college.

One skillset and knowledge base that interior designers are most often associated with is materiality, surfaces and furniture systems. It is true, that these systems are essential to the discipline; but they are one of many systems that we must address and integrate in order to create interior spatial solutions that meet the needs of people and influence the way people connect with, use and experience space. In addition to material and furniture systems, interior designers must identify and formulate solutions while considering: context and site, programming and space planning, human behavior and social factors, ergonomics, spatial standards and building codes, lighting and acoustics, and space-making and volume.

As described in the ARCH 613/614 syllabus “Design Thesis investigations are instrumental in their role for future professional development and may also act as springboards for further academic pursuit. A correctly-formed design thesis investigation identifies a subject for inquiry that is of relevance to a larger architecture audience, researches the subject both through the discovery of scholarly sources and the generation of new creative content, develops the design thesis question and ultimately generates a response that can be supported, argued and defended in a polemical way.”

The College of Architecture is excited to announce that six College of Architecture employees were recognized on Friday by the UNL Parents Association and awarded a “Certificate of Recognition for Contributions to Students”. This certificate is awarded annually by the UNL Parents Association to faculty and staff members on campus who “have made a significant contribution to their lives while at the University.”

is hosting its second annual Recognizing Exceptional Design (R.E.D.) Student Portfolio Competition.
The students (undergraduate and graduate) awarded best overall portfolios will each receive a three-month paid summer internship at any U.S. MG2 office, plus a $500 housing stipend each month.

The APA has a scholarship called the Tom Cory Scholarship for students pursuing a career in Architecture. Tom Cory was a founding member of the APA and in his honor the APA developed this scholarship.

The theme of the contest is a Cultural Center in Senegal (Africa), which aims to protect traditional cultures and solve humanitarian emergencies with the architecture. The initiative has two objectives: the development of research in architecture on issues of social emergencies, and contributing to a humanitarian emergency in Senegal. The winning team will win an internship at the Kengo Kuma Office in Tokyo and cash prizes.

Walt Disney World internships provide students with experience in Landscape, Irrigation and Area Development (AD) design, specifically. AD includes themed paving, railings and site furnishings. Familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its application to the outdoor environment is important.
