A Special Day for Special Kids

SUSD's Adapted Physical Education Department hosted more than 300, K-8 special needs students from more than 20 District schools Feb. 21 at the annual Special Kids Field Day at Mountain View Park. Familiar sports, restaurant and agency mascots were on hand to greet the students, and area first response agencies, including the Scottsdale Fire and Police departments, were there to show off equipment. The day was made even better by the many volunteers who helped guide students in various modified field day activities. Some of the volunteers were SUSD's own high school special needs students, who used the experience to work on their life goals. It's safe to say a wonderful time was had by all!

Celebrating Reading
M
arch is all about reading in SUSD elementary schools as the March 2 birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known to millions of early readers as Dr. Seuss, is celebrated as National Read Across America Day. Reading activities abounded as older elementary students read with their younger reading 'buddies.' At Redfield Elementary School, for example, older students prepared a delicious breakfast of green eggs and ham (!) and the Cat in the Hat herself (aka Principal Christine Bonow) dropped in on Mrs. Graham's first grade class to read a favorite Dr. Seuss book.

Civic Engagement = Cocopah
SUSD's Cocopah Middle School is among 35 schools recently recognized by the Arizona Department of Education for its work in ensuring its students are prepared to be informed and engaged citizens. Cocopah received recognition as a School of Distinction in the ADE's Excellence in Civic Education Program and can call itself an 'Arizona Civic Engagement School.'
Schools are selected for their
effective implementation of six proven practices in civic learning: classroom instruction in civics and government, history, economics, geography, law and democracy; service learning linked to classroom learning; experiential learning; learning through participation in models and simulations of democratic processes and procedures; guided classroom discussion of current issues and events; and meaningful participation in school governance.

Meet the Acting Superintendent 
The SUSD Governing Board has appointed Dr. Amy Fuller to serve as Acting Superintendent, and she would like to meet you!
Dr. Fuller will visit each of the District's learning communities during the next month, with evening sessions this month and morning meetings in April.

When the Arizona Geographic Bee is held April 6 in Tucson, SUSD will be well represented with seven contestants.

Fourth through eighth graders are eligible to compete in the state and national bees. The state bee is sponsored by the Arizona Geographic Alliance.
The state champion will be invited to take part in the National Geographic Bee to be held in Washington, D.C. May 20-23. The national bee celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

DECA Hits the Road 
Nineteen thousand high school students, advisors, business persons and alumni will converge on Atlanta's Georgia World Conference Center April 21-24 for the DECA International Career Development Conference, and SUSD DECA students will be among them.
Students from Desert Mountain and Chaparral High schools who earned medals at the state competition will now take their
college and career-ready knowledge and skills to Atlanta to take part in DECA's industry-validated Competitive Events Program, aligned with Career Clusters, National Curriculum Standards and 21st
Century Skills in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality, management and entrepreneurship. More than 1,000 business
professionals will serve as expert judges to evaluate DECA members' mastery of these concepts.
In addition, thousands of the assembled students will participate in DECA's Emerging Leader Series, which helps them attain 21st century skills in the areas of collaboration and teamwork, communication, critical thinking and problem solving, and creativity. Executive mentors will provide college and career advice.

Winter Sports Athletes Feted 
Nearly 50 high school students who were part of SUSD 2017-18 basketball, soccer and wrestling teams were celebrated March 5 at the second All-District Athletics Awards banquet. Arizona Cardinals running back D.J. Foster addressed the athletes and their guests, recalling his days as a standout football player at Saguaro High School.
Delaney Rohde, Desert Mountain High School soccer, and Jack Spier, Arcadia High School soccer, were each named recipients of a $500 Charro Foundation scholarship.
The third and final All-District banquet celebrating spring sports student athletes is on tap for May 16.

SUSD Sports Wrap 
Chaparral High School has two state titles to celebrate: The Lady Firebirds walked off with state 5A championships in both girls soccer (defeated Notre Dame Prep, 3-2 in OT) and girls basketball (downed defending state champ Mesquite, 63-55). The SUSD Governing Board has invited both teams to its March meeting tomorrow.
The Arcadia girls basketball team also had an outstanding season, falling in the semis to Chaparral.
Just as they did on the hardwoods throughout the season, Arcadia's Bryce Nixon and Chaparral's Maddie Vick will battle it out to be named American Family Insurance All-USA Arizona High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Even though Coronado Hig
h School's girls basketball team could not advance in the state playoffs beyond its play-in victory over Moon Valley, it was the first time in more than 20 years that the Lady Dons have gone that far. Delaney Howard and Zhira Cephas received first team All-Region honors, and Zhira was named Defensive Player of the Region. Their first year coach, Jamie Fellows, is one of the nominees for Coach of the Year. The team finished 13-9 overall and were 9-1 in section play.
