Project Impact:STEM & Innovation at Laguna Rd
This week in the STEM Lab Third graders concluded their lessons on forces and magnets with by engineering Never-Ending Magnet Swings! Groups have been working diligently to design, build, test, and revise to find a successful solution. Students worked together wonderfully to collaborate and persevere through several iterations of their designs that did not work. This activity was the culmination of several months of hard work conceptualizing different forces and putting their knowledge into practice!

“Only 19% of Bachelor’s Degrees in Computer Science were awarded to women as recently as 2010”, highlighting the need for exposure to STEM at early ages for all genders.
Tech Corner
Third grade students have been using Little Bits to create electrical circuits. In these pictures, 3rd graders have used Little Bits to power a magnet swing and roundabout to create a game where the magnet swing needs to pick up the play pieces as they spin around. Completely designed and engineered by our students, these are a great example of technology and innovation at Laguna!
Writing Workshop
First grade students love writing their Informational "How-To" texts! Each mini-lesson helps bring the first graders closer to choosing a topic they are "expert" on and learning how to teach others about their expert topic. Students in this first grade class did a group brainstorm on their expert topics and then use the "first, next, then, last" sentence starters to compose their work!
