NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
ELECTRONIC BILLBOARD QUEST COMES TO CAPITAL
March 20, 2018, The New Haven Independent, by Markeshia Ricks- "The fate of a digital billboard erected on Whalley Avenue is clear. It's not going anywhere.
But west-side neighbors and elected officials said the city shoul have more explicit power to regulate such future billboards, though outdoor advertising advocates say it already has such powers.
Lawmakers heard that testimony here Monday on a bill being backed by New Haven State Rep. Pat Dillon. She said the bill would help clarify cities' authority to regulate such billboards and allow cities like New Haven to regulate the brightness and hours that such billboards can operate..." LLS FOR ARTIST
CALL TO ARTIST @KLG
"What is the point of making beautiful things, or of cherishing the beauty of the past, when ugliness runs rampant?" asks Alex Ross in the 2017 New Yorker magazine article "Making Art in a Time of Rage." Ross later references a London gallery that, in the midst of World War II, prefaced the exhibition catalogue for Jacob Epstein's flower paintings with a quote from
Shakespeare:
"How with this rage will beauty hold a plea?..."

SUSAN MCCASLIN WALL/PAPER II
McCaslin writes: "Spring is on its way and what a relief. It has been a long winter during which I have spent many hours in my studio dyeing paper in preparation for Protection/Protected, my solo show at the Schumacher Gallery at Westover School in Middlebury CT.
If you made it to my 2015 exhibition at Hamden Hall, you will remember Wall/Paper, 800+ sheets of dyed newspaper that I installed on a 32' x 14' wall. At Schumacher Gallery, I have installed a larger version-over 2000 sheets to cover a 35' x 22' wall-that I have named Wall/Paper II. And along with that, some new and familiar work can be seen. The opening reception is Friday, March 23 from 6:15 - 7:15 pm. I hope you can attend.
Westover School is about 35 minutes from New Haven and Bridgeport or 60 minutes from Stamford. Click here for Google Map. Exhibits may be viewed from noon to 5 pm Monday through Friday and from 1 to 5 pm on Saturday when classes are in session."

MARJORIE WOLFE'S
FAR AND WIDE + TOM EDWARDS EXTENDED VISIONS
Marjorie Gillette Wolfe's, "Far and Wide" and Tom Edwards, "Extended Visions," March 22nd - April 22nd. OPENING RECEPTION: March 25th, 3-6pm; CLOSING EVENT: April 22nd, 1-4pm, w/ artist talk @ 2pm.
ABOUT the SHOWS:
The work in Marjorie Wolfe's latest collection of photographs was either composed on a recent trip to Italy, or on her favorite island, Martha's Vineyard; all are spare, simple compositions presented in similar formats. Wolfe explains: "Panoramas and composite photographs are meant to unfold a wide world where separate images are arranged to form a single view. ... They show more than what our eyes let us see in one glance, but that we know is there."
Similarly, Tom Edwards' ever-evolving multimedia
artworks "are not intended to represent any single moment in time, but rather to assimilate multiple moments and observations into a dynamic experience." Edwards states that most of these works have been produced over an extended period of time, which allows for a constant reworking: "I think of [the works] as open-ended compositions ... Time affects everything, including the way I perceive my own work."
ARTIST TALKS presented by ArtEcon Initiative (www.arteconinitiative.org) and made possible with support from the City of New Haven Mayor's Community Arts Grants Program, and the Department of Economic and Community Development, CT Office of the Arts, which also receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
