Principal's Message

We have been busy working on the writing process to prepare for the AIR end of year assessment. Our 2nd through 5th grade students are using the Fast Five writing format to help organize their ideas in order to successfully write extended responses. Our younger students are working on foundational writing skills. The Glendening staff is posting writing responses on the new front office bulletin board to show students that we are all writers. On March 28th we are having a practice testing day. We will treat the 28th like a regular testing day so students throughout the building understand what is expected of them and it will help them feel more confident during the AIR assessment.

Spring parent teacher conferences are on March 22nd and March 27th. Please be sure to schedule a time to meet with your child's teacher.

Thanks for checking out our newsletter and remember you can follow us on twitter @glendeningelem and check out our website at  gocruisers.org/glendeningelementary_home.aspx

It's great to be a Cruiser!

Glendening Walk-a-thon, Thursday, March 29th

We are raising funds for our Encore Classes: art and music.  The funds will be used to support our Artists in the Schools series, provide recorders for all 4th and 5th grade students, assist with the 3rd grade symphony field trip,  and buy other art and music supplies as they are needed.
Our walk-a-thon will be Thursday, March 29th.

By participating in the walk-a-thon, students will not only enjoy the benefits of enriched instruction in art and music, but will also earn the following prizes:
  • $2-Participate in the walk-a-thon and cool off with a popsicle afterwards
  • $5-Candy prize bag
  • $8-Ten raffle tickets (to be entered for additional prizes)
  • $10-Extra recess pass
  • $15-Enjoy a donut party in the morning after arriving at school
  • $20-No homework pass
  • $25-WATERIFIC recess, enjoy an extra recess with water games, sprinklers, beach balls, and other fun activities
  • $35-Enjoy a pizza party at lunchtime
  • $50-Large Prize Bag
  • $60- Dairy Queen
Our top earner and their family will enjoy dinner and a movie on us!
All prizes are cumulative.  For example, if a student brings in $25, they have earned the popsicle, candy prize bag, raffle tickets,  donut party, no homework pass, and waterific recess.
Encore Rotation Change

We will be trying a new type of rotation with our encore (art, music, gym) schedule.  Currently, students rotate through all three classes in three school days. Although this gives students a great variety of experiences in those three days, students have difficulty retaining the information that has been taught. This results in spending a lot of class time reviewing.  Reviewing is certainly necessary at times, but it's not as engaging or fun as applying the information by creating music and artwork. It's also very challenging for students to accurately show what they know on assessments.

On Monday, March 12th, students started attending one encore class for an entire week.  The hope is that will we be able to tailor instruction to each class, and that we will have more time to assist students who may need some extra help.  The continuity will allow us to dig deeper into the topics we cover, and assessments will be more effective and accurate.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact  Mrs. Hysell, music teacher, or  Mrs. Stauffer-Miller, art teacher, at  614-836-4972
My School Color Run

The Glendening Student Council will host the inaugural community wide My School Color Run on Saturday, April 28th at 10:00 am to raise money for school improvement and field trips. This is an untimed 5K fun run for all ages and fitness abilities. Along the route, participants pass through vibrant color zones, making it a "colorful experience". Additionally, each pre-registered participant will receive a single powder color packet that will be thrown in the air at the final color celebration at the finish line.

"Rather than sell goods, we want to engage the entire student body in a fitness initiative that aims to encourage a life-long healthy way of living", says Nicole Mays. Participants that register by Saturday, April 14th will receive a t-shirt, race bib, and individual color packet.

You can sign up for the run by visiting  https://events.myschoolcolorrun.com/   and searching for your event or by completing a paper registration form.

Business sponsorship opportunities are also available.

For more information contact the event organizer, Nicole Mays at (614) 836-4972

A special thank you to Nicole Mays, Megan Horan, and the Glendening Student Council!

Fast Five Writing

Glendening students are gearing up for the writing portion of the AIR assessment. Students of all grade levels are working on writing throughout the building. Our 3rd through 5th grades are working on multi paragraph responses using a graphic organizer. Students are also required to pull evidence from multiple texts to support their writing response.  We are seeing growth in student writing and feel our students are better prepared for success in April.

A release of a grade 3 writing item from the fall 2017 Ohio State English Language Arts Tests is now available in the  Ohio's State Test portal These items give educators insight into the kinds of questions students experienced, and they are a useful tool to inform classroom instruction. Both teachers and parents may use this resource to help students know what to expect.

Included with each item in this release are the associated learning standard(s) and the scoring rubrics. Examples of student responses also are available to illustrate actual work and the corresponding points earned on the student examples.

Second Step Social Emotional Learning

The district has implemented a new program this year called Second Step for our school counseling program.  The  Second Step  Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Program gives students the tools to excel in and out of the classroom. The program garners outstanding reviews from educators who've noticed schoolwide improvement and see even the most challenging students make progress in  emotion management, situational awareness, and academic achievement .

With age-appropriate lessons, the Second Step Program for K-5 features catchy songs, fun games, and other engaging activities that develop social-emotional skills. Children learn how to make friends, manage their emotions, solve problems, and deal with peer pressure. The program continues through middle school with topics focused on particular age groups.

We take great pride in the fact that the programs are based on current research in the field.

Growth Mindset Quote

"She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails."

Here at Glendening we feel it is important to have a growth mindset. We will share inspirational quotes to keep us focused on reaching higher levels of achievement.

What is a growth mindset? "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment," Carol Dweck.
