Study of data from previous Alzheimer studies identifies potential new target for research

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology used data from 51 existing studies. A new data analysis performed by Georgia Tech researchers has untangled evidence amassed in years of Alzheimer's studies and has given researchers new targets for studies about the diesease, according to a university article.

Though the bad amyloid-beta protein does appear to be an accomplice in the disease, the study has pointed to a more likely offender, another protein-gone-bad called phosphorylated tau (p-tau), according to the article.

Medical research advocacy group says Trump budget proposal will slow research

President Trump's proposed 2019 budget would effectively freeze funding for the National Institutes of Health at a level that falls below what Congress has proposed for even FY 2018, the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research said this month in a statement.

"The return on investment in the NIH pays a lifetime of dividends in better health and quality of life for Americans, young and old," according to the statement. "Yet, rather than strengthening the federal commitment to the NIH, the president's FY 2019 budget proposal effectively would freeze funding for the agency at a level that falls below what Congress has proposed for even FY 2018."

The Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research is a coalition of 300 patient and voluntary health groups, medical and scientific societies, academic and research organizations, and industry. The Ad Hoc Group has one mission: to enhance the federal investment in  biomedical, behavioral, social, and population-based research by increasing the funding for the National Institutes of Health.

U of Penn researchers find stem cell property to speed up the restart of blood cells and immune systems in cancer patients

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science have found a property of stem cells that may speed the restart of blood cells and immune system components after a patient's own are compromised, according to a university article.

In a patient, the new cells need to make their way from the circulatory system into the bones as quickly as possible, according to the article. To do that, they must find the spots where blood vessels and bone are in close contact.
