SOUPER FOOTBALL PARTY TOMORROW
In the Undercroft at 5:15 Souper Bowl

The men of the church are hosting a Souper Football  Party tomorrow in the Undercroft.  Watch the BIG GAME at 5:15 pm on the new Resurrection flat screen TV! We'll also be collecting canned soup for the needy. Bring your friends, a finger food or snacks and your preferred beverage to watch the NFL's Big Game.
BOOK CLUB WILL MEET MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5 A Man Called Ove
7 pm in the Undercroft  

The Finding Faith Through Fiction Book Club will meet on Monday, February 5 at 7 pm in the undercroft.  This month's reading is the New York Times Bestseller A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.
Ove is a curmudgeon-the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVID
The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
 
This feast day (February 2, 2018) celebrates the proclamation of Jesus the baby as the one foretold that will come to save the world. I share this for us to ponder in our daily life as we watch and pray for the coming of Jesus in glory.
 
Luke 2:22-40
When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."
 
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,
 
"Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,  according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation,  which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentilesand for glory to your people Israel." And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed-- and a sword will pierce your own soul too."
 
There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
 
When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
 
Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER and BURNING OF THE PALMS
6 pm on Tuesday, February 13

Shrove TuesdayBring your family to Resurrection on Tuesday, February 13 to enjoy a delicious pancake supper before the season of Lent begins.  We'll be serving pancakes, sausage, bacon and drinks beginning at 6 pm.
                         
Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages.  To keep food from being wasted, families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats, and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. 

Did you save your palm fronds from Palm Sunday last year?
 
Bring them to the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper and join Fr. David for a brief service to bless and burn the palms.  The palms are a reminder of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem.  The ashes symbolize death and remind us of our mortality.  The ashes created at the burning of the palms will be used in our Ash Wednesday services.
