February is Black History Month
Each week this month, we'll be featuring articles about the contributions of African-Americans to the Social Work profession. This week, we reflect on the contributions of several
African-American social service pioneers
who helped pave the way for the professionalization of social work, among them Dorothy I. Height.

"Born in Virginia in 1912, Dorothy Height was a leader in addressing the rights of both women and African Americans as the president of the National Council of Negro Women. In the 1990s, she drew young people into her cause in the war against drugs, illiteracy and unemployment. The numerous honors bestowed upon her include the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994) and the Congressional Gold Medal (2004)." (Biography.com, January 19, 2018).

NASW Protests Family Separation Policy
 Recently, more than 200 child welfare, juvenile justice, and child development organizations, including NASW and NASW-NJ, came together and called on the Administration to abandon its plans to take children from their parents when their families arrive at the U.S. border seeking protection.
The
joint letter to the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security observes: "There is overwhelming evidence that children need to be cared for by their parents to be safe and healthy, to grow and develop. Likewise, there is ample evidence that separating children from their mothers or fathers leads to serious, negative consequences to children's health and development."

Movie Event: Lion
On Sunday, February 11, 2018, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies will co-sponsor a viewing and discussion of the movie, Lion. Lion is based on a true story of a boy who was lost to his family in India and was adopted by an Australian family.
Early experiences with parental figures play a significant role in the psychological development of a child. Later in life, these early experiences often are transferentially recreated in new relationships. These dynamics are demonstrated in the movie, Lion.
