Local Film and TV Production was on the Rise in 2017
2017 was another boffo year for local film and media production. Last year, eight full-season television series, including NBC's
Chicago Fire, FOX's
Empire and Showtime's
The Chi, were among the 580 individual film and media projects produced in Chicago, resulting in an estimated $423 million economic impact. The Chicago Film Office issued a total of 2,127 permits in support of these projects, a 10 percent increase over 2016, part of asteady year over year increase in media production since 2011.

Keith Haring: The Chicago Mural opens at the Chicago Cultural Center on March 3
Presented as part of the City of Chicago's Year of Creative Youth,
Keith Haring: The Chicago Mural will feature 36 original panels of the monumental mural created in 1989 by internationally-acclaimed artist Keith Haring with the assistance of 500 Chicago Public School students in Chicago's Grant Park. The mural is a reflection of Haring's incisive draftsmanship and symbolic characters (e.g. radiant baby, barking dog). Presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in partnership with the Chicago Public Schools, the exhibition will also feature a collection of photographs, correspondence, designs, plans, t-shirt drawings and much more.

Join us for Mavis!, the first feature documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers. From the freedom songs of the '60s and hits like "I'll Take You There" in the '70s, to funked-up collaborations with Prince and her recent albums with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Mavis has stayed true to her roots, kept her family close, and inspired millions along the way.
