The Messenger

From the Pastor

In light of the recent situation at Morning Star Church, I thought this information should be shared.

Safe Sanctuary at Trinity
As Christians we must take our responsibility to our children, youth and vulnerable adults very seriously.
  • While policies alone may not be able to completely prevent all harm, sexual abuse can be prevented.
  • We as the people of Trinity UMC are dedicated to preventing child abuse within our ministry and within our community.
These words are at the beginning of our Safe Sanctuary Policy for Trinity UMC. We have heard the recent news of Morning Star Community Church having serious allegations of sexual misconduct by clergy and staff. Our prayers are with those who have been victims of such abuse and those who violated the sanctity of their positions.

We want you to be aware that at Trinity UMC we have an active policy that is reviewed every year and enforced everyday. We are in the process of planning a training for those who work and/or volunteer with vulnerable groups of people and we are carefully tracking our background checks. We will also have a Sunday morning dedicated to the importance of Safe Sanctuary in church soon. Copies of our official policy are available in the office. If you have any questions about the policy or its enforcement, contact me.

If there is ever a time you feel unsafe or uncomfortable due to someone's words or actions, please let me or the Person in Charge of the event know immediately. If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable due to the words or actions of the clergy or lay staff, contact our SPRC chairperson, Ardeth Jerde, and/or me. If you have had an experience in the past at Trinity UMC that made you uncomfortable, please contact me; Ardeth; or the adult with whom you feel most comfortable.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Sandy

A Thank You
from Carole Wilson

When mom, Jeanette Alexander Pierce, passed away, one of my first calls was to Trinity. Pastor Sandy graciously offered the services of the church and those of Rose Rhoads. Rose contacted her team, who together, prepared the most scrumptious foods for Jeanette's celebration of life. Behind the scenes people were eagerly setting up tables and assisting each other. I know there were many people who came forward to help, and although I may not be aware of who you were, what you contributed was equally as important to making this moment special. Pat Gillespie persevered through technical difficulties until they were resolved. Nadine Gilmore brought the Lord's music to life with the piano. Kathy Webb was helping with the food when I arrived. Later she was handing out the programs. Next she handed me an envelope containing cards and information. For all the steps I would have missed, the Trinity family, the people I remember as my Trinity family, were there with their kindness, wisdom and talents to guide me. I am forever blessed having grown up in Trinity. Thank you all for your condolences and the gifts of God's love you shared with Doug, Kirk and me.

Special Class Offering: The Anatomy of Peace
This class is for anyone who desires to get at the heart of conflict  and find the heart of peace. We'll ask:
  • What if conflicts at home, conflicts at work, and conflicts in the world stem from the same root cause?
  • What if we systematically misunderstand that cause?
  • And what if, as a result, we systematically perpetuate the very problem we think we are trying to solve?
Conflict is inevitable. In the church, we fondly reflect on the verse where Jesus says, "Wherever two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." Mat. 18:20 We could just as easily say, "wherever two or three are gathered, at some point, there will be conflict." Just think of when you are ordering a pizza with others or selecting a new carpet color for the church sanctuary. The problem is not that there is conflict, rather problems develop because we do not know how to work through the conflict.

The format for the Table Talk discussions scheduled throughout Oregon-Idaho related to the work of "A Way Forward" and the direction of The United Methodist Church is based on the material from this book. (May 22 in Salem at Micah, FUMC) During Annual Conference, we will be hearing a speaker trained in "The Anatomy of Peace."

Pastor Wendy will be offering two classes to engage the material of this book beginning  April 10 and continuing through May 1.  Classes will be held:
  • Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. at Morningside UMC and
  • Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. at either FUMC or Morningside.
If you are interested and plan to attend, contact Pastor Wendy at pastorwendymumc@gmail.com . You can order your own book through Amazon or  Cokesbury . If you would like Wendy to order you a book, email her ASAP.

Please read Part 1: The Heart of Peace, if you can for class on April 10.

Blessings,
Pastor Wendy
