Dear Families of Saint Joseph Elementary,
I want to encourage, short of mandating, that you take the opportunity to learn more about your child and the challenges they face in terms of navigating social media.
I asked one of our parents, David Pascoe who works for the Alameda Police Department, for some resources that would be helpful to both students and parents. Sergeant David Pascoe, who works with the Special Investigations/Narcotics Unit, and Michaelia Parker, the Crime Prevention Technician who works within the Alameda Police Department’s Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) unit, will address our students during the day and our parents in the evening.
Michaelia actively engages with the community through social media, public events, Neighborhood Watch Programs, and school engagements in order to educate citizens on safety tips and crime prevention tactics. Aside from her professional role, she has experience working with teens during the college recruitment process and engaging with a diverse range of youth as a former AAU and high school basketball coach.
Through this parent meeting, my hope is that all of us will be better able to support our students to use social media responsibly and, without serious, lifelong, damaging consequences.
Also, please know that in an effort to encourage attendance, we are offering a free dress pass to all students whose parents attend this meeting. Thank you, and I hope to see you there.
God’s Blessing on Each of Us,
Dr. Marquita Yriarte
Principal
