a message from the ptsa president
As our hearts go out to the families in Parkland, Florida, we must also remember our school-aged children who are struggling with how to feel safe going to school every day.

I attended the McLean Citizens Association public forum with FCPS Supt Dr. Braband on Monday night. The audience was filled with several rows of high school students, more than I have ever seen at one of these evening events in McLean. Many spoke about their safety concerns while attending school. It highlighted to me the importance of making sure our children understand the measures currently in place to protect them. We need to reassure them that the adults around them continually review plans and work to improve them.

Sharing information in the KIT messages sent from FCPS and LHS outlining current safety measures may alleviate some of your child's concerns. The Office of Safety and Security page on the FCPS website shares important information, including an anonymous tip line to report any concerning behaviors. This is a very stressful and emotional time for all of us. Please remind your student that, in addition to the support at LHS, there are mental health resources and a crisis hotline available through FCPS.

Thank you to Mr. Amico and the Langley staff for all they're doing to support our community during this difficult time. They're giving students a framework to express their support for the Parkland students and concerns about what happened while minimizing disruption to the school day. Last week, administrators were available to supervise students during a small walk out.

Mr. Amico hosted a well-attended Town Hall meeting this week. He also has been talking to students one-on-one and in small groups. If your child is feeling concerned or anxious, Mr. Amico and the administrative team are there to provide support, so encourage your student to stop by and see them. Additionally, our School Resource Officer (SRO), John Morris, is a visible presence at Langley and is available to talk to our students about any safety concerns.

As students try to figure out what action to take in the wake of these tragic shootings, we're reminded that active and involved citizens are the ones who bring about change. Here in Fairfax, students can attend School Board and Board of Supervisor meetings. With our proximity to Richmond and DC, students can request meetings with our state and local representatives to voice their opinions on how to ensure their safety in school. Engaged citizens can be a part of the solution. Help your children learn how to be sure their voice is heard.

All of us -- parents, students, staff and the community -- must work together and remain vigilant to ensure the safety of our schools.

~ Jennifer Feinstein, PTSA President

make your voice heard on school funding
The McLean Citizens Association (MCA) is sponsoring a citizen's information meeting featuring Dranesville Supervisor John Foust and Fairfax County CFO Joe Mondoro. They'll present information and answer questions about the FY2019 Fairfax County budget. The event will take place on Mon, Mar 5, 7:30 pm at the McLean HS Cafeteria .

With a new Superintendent at its helm, FCPS asked for a 4.9% increase in funds from the County Supervisors. Our Supervisors must make difficult choices about how to fund our school system, public safety, human services, parks and libraries; whether to continue offering generous pensions with growing liabilities and annual contributions; and/or to raise our property taxes.

This is a prime opportunity for FCPS parents and students to let Supervisor Foust know school funding must be a top priority.

more coverage of swim & dive at states
Following the coverage last week of the men's team State Championship, here's more detail on the 13 athletes who participated from both teams. Two new men's team records were set (amazing considering five new team records were set at regionals two weeks prior) and the men earned the state title!

The women had excellent swims including a 10th place finish in the 500 free for Natalia Rongione. Megan Jungers placed 12th in the 100 back and 6th in butterfly. They also competed in a relay that included Hanna Sun and Erica Barton.

On the men's side, Casey Storch had two first-place finishes, in the 100 breast and the 200 IM. Casey already held the 200 IM record and set the new school record in the 100 breast at regionals. Tyler Zuyus also achieved two first place finishes in his events, the 200 free and 500 free, setting new school records in both. The boys final first place finish came from the 400 relay they swam with Will Koeppen and Darius Truong. Mason Greenblatt, Johnny Bradshaw, Justin Gomez, Chase Bradshaw, and Robert Luebke also swam in the state meet.

The overall first-place finish was a team effort with many great swims and dives, including a 6th place finish in the diving competition by Dylan Reed. Reed broke the school's 6 dive record during the conference meet.
