General News
Principal's Perspective
Dear Delone Catholic Parents,

In the December 8, 2017 issue of the Squire Wire, I brought to your attention concerns raised by many local high school administrators concerning students and their involvement with a new form of vaping known as "juuling." Vaping has unfortunately become popular with teens as a way to inhale nicotine-flavored "e-juice" or oils that may or may not contain nicotine, as well as illegal substances such as marijuana concentrate or chemical synthetic drugs. The most common of these devices used to inhale these substances are e-cigarettes, vape pens, and JUUL pods, currently the most popular device being used by teens.  JUUL pods are very easy to hide and can easily be mistaken for flash drives.

As stated in the Student Handbook (page 26), "Smoking has been shown to be harmful to one's health by the U.S. Surgeon's Office.  The Board of Directors voted to make Delone Catholic, its buildings and grounds, a smoke-free facility.  This policy includes vaping.

Students, regardless of age, are prohibited from possessing/using tobacco and or tobacco paraphernalia, at any time, on school property, or within the viewing area of the school, or at school functions . . . . Use of tobacco products, and/or paraphernalia will result in a 1-to-3 day in-school suspension on the first offense.  The second offense will result in expulsion.  The administration may notify civil authorities at their discretion.

A student possessing, using or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol at school and/or at any school sponsored activity, or any off campus involvement which becomes public, will be suspended for 3-5 days."   The suspended student will be referred to our student assistance program, called TASC (Teachers Addressing Student Concerns), whose purpose is to evaluate, counsel and direct student intervention.

As always, the safety, health, and security of our students is a primary concern and I will continue to keep you informed of issues related to them.  In the meantime, please have a frank discussion with your child about the potential dangers associated with vaping and drug and alcohol use.

It is an express condition of enrollment that our students behave in a manner that is consistent with the Christian principles of the school and my expectation that their behavior be a reflection of their inherent dignity as sons and daughters of God.

Thank you for your support. May God bless you always and in all ways,

Richard V. La Rocca
Principal

A Note About Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day from Bishop Gainer
"This year Ash Wednesday coincides with Valentine's Day (February 14), a largely secular celebration, particularly in the United States. There have been inquiries if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat  will be given. As Catholics, we recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayer, penance, and works of charity. Its spiritual importance is evidenced by the large number of faithful choosing to attend Mass on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday, the obligations of fast and abstinence are naturally the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated on another day, such as Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which happens to be Mardi Gras, a time of celebration prior to the Lenten journey."
