Counselor's Corner Jan. 2018
This month's lesson will focus on the Lifeskill of Respect and how to show kindness with our words and actions. We discussed the importance of knowing how to show respect not only at school, but also in all aspects of our everyday lives.
Guidance Lesson Recap:
Grade K: We read the story
Llama Llama and the Bully Goat, by Anna Dewdney. The story focused on a little llama who had a hard time with another student putting her down and saying unkind words. In the end, the friends learned the importance of standing up for herself. We also discussed examples of what to say in situations when friendship issues arise.
Grades 1: We read the book
Yes We Can! by Sam McBratney. This story emphasized how giving compliments and encouraging others is a great way to build friendships and show respect. In the story, the duck, rabbit, and the little mouse all realized that they all have different strengths to focus on rather than each other's weaknesses.
Grades 2-3: We read the book
Andrews's Angry Words by Dorothea Lachner. The book was about a boy who said hurtful words to his sister when he got frustrated. The lesson showed how saying hurtful words can affect many people in having a chain reaction when our mood can rub off on others. As a class, we discussed respectful ways to react when frustrated and discussed the importance of staying calm when frustrated.
Grades 4-5: We read the book
The Three Bully Goats Gruff by Caldecott Medalist & Jerry Pinkney. Our lesson focused on how these three bully goals showed disrespect to others in many ways, such as with put downs and not respecting other's property. As a class, we brainstormed many positive ways to treat others with respect and how to stand up for yourself if someone is disrespectful to you.
Grades 6-8: We discussed as a group how important it is to be respectful to others. We brainstormed many ways to show respect to others and focused on following directions the first time. As a tie in to that example, the students all participated in the game of Simon Says.
